Looks like a lot of shady stuff went on, so many poor MB's.
![]() A lot of M103's were killed.... And supposedly a 1992 300D 2.5? Those get WAY above 18mpg....how was that allowed?! 1,324 300E's died. ![]() And over 2,000 W126's.... ![]() ![]() ![]() It looks like the M103 was the most widely destroyed engine. ![]() ![]() I sure hope that most of the MB's turned in were ones not worth buying or fixing. I bet a lot were, but I also bet a lot were not.

I think most Benz owners were glad for a chance to get out from under their burden.
A good friend was ready to off her 2000 E320 but it missed the fuel mileage cut-off. If Benz built a more cost effective car the trade-in numbers would have been less. Last edited by Chas H; 09-30-2009 at 12:20 AM. |

Eh, mine hasn't had any issues yet. In the overall life of the car, a head gasket or two is a pretty small cost.....other than that its a real great motor.

I can just picture people laughing while they ran a 500E's hand built porsche engine without oil until it froze up... ugh that's horrible...

A sleazy, sloppy plan, which was sleazily, sloppily carried out. While I personally cringe at the MBs lost, they were a very small percentage of what this program did. It was abject waste, coupled with "reward" to those who wasted most. I have zero, zero desire to see any of the U.S car makes succeed at this point, just as I have zero desire to see the short-sighted banks succeed. We'd all suffer but maybe out of it all, a real economy would rise up, at least until we fall to the same delusion again in many years. Congratulations, America. Our government has less class than the cheesiest used-car sales lot you can find on the off-hours of your public-access channel.

Anybody with a job in the auto industry should be glad for the program.
Personally I am very sceptical of any decent cars being crushed. Doesn't make any sense....now do I think the auto dealers could screw up and write the wrong model down? HA! OF COURSE! A lot of excitement over nothing, IMHO.
