Woo is me. A beautiful '68 250s
I found this totally awesome '68 250 s on craigslist near my home in PA. I'm in such utter disbelief right now and would snatch it up if I was nearby and had that cash for it.
http://ashtabula.craigslist.org/cto/1383788083.html Here's some of the pictures. Its engine was replaced. I'm salivating over the thought of it. He doesn't have that title which seems a bit sketchy, but a carfax and DMV call should clear most of that up. Anyone near Conneaut OH should pick this baby up. I wish I had the cash and time to get this little gem Edit: I am an idiot for misspelling woe :-P

The car has a big fat title problem. Read the ad. This guy for some reason did not go through the legal process to obtain title to the car due to non-payment for services rendered, something that is not all that hard to do in most, if not all, states. Someone else, therefore, has a claim on this car. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

In some states cars of a certain age don't need titles, but I don't think Ohio is one of those.

In New Hampshire you can register cars over fifteen years old with just a Bill of Sale, but that doesn't make you immune from a lawsuit if there is some heir to this supposed "elderly couple"'s estate out looking for the car. When you register it, the VIN number allows them to send a notice to the legal owner's last known address, and I know in at least NH they do this to prevent stolen cars from being registered.
You open yourself up to all kinds of legal jeopardy, unlawful use of property, receiving stolen property, conspiracy to defraud. The only way to buy that car is to get the legal issues resolved. The first thing is to check with the state to find out who actually holds legal title to the car and to contact them and find out why they didn't clear the title. Just dealing directly with this guy is asking for it, the story is too convenient so the whole deal smells. A car of that age could easily be claimed by whomever holds title to be an "antique worth thousands", and triple damages will not be pretty if they come looking for it and you bought it from someone who was not the legal owner. Every ding, dent and mile will belong to you. The legal owner could claim it was in pristine shape with only 3,000 miles, and come after you for damages. I loved the Freudian slip in the description of the car. "Duel" carbs. Ain't that the truth! Anybody who has ever dealt with keeping those babies in sync knows what I'm talking about!
Seriously, no title means a $500 car at most. If the title were so easy to get wouldn't he do it and not reduce the price? Abandoned vehicle titles are available but they can take up to 90 days and you take the chance the car may be claimed by the former owners' family. |

No title means junk yard prices. Buy it and sell the parts on Ebay or for scrap, that's about it.

There is a 66 250 S on ebay for $1100, and it's not bad.

Yeah I'd rather not battle the DMV.
i guess do what I've done for my other friend, drive up in my cherry 300D and talk to him. Be really disappointed about the no title and offer 500$ since it's a legal nightmare. Tow home and wait 3 years for the DMV to do anything. Edit: I'm tempted to get the VIN from the guy and run a carfax. Maybe that would reveal some interesting information.

I was able to car fax my 83 280SL Euro. It showed the point-of-entry docs from the moment it hit the US shore onward, but nothing before that on the car. It did give me a record of state inspections and the mileage recorded at each inspection and the number of owners in the US.

Woo is me? You are wooing yourself? Sounds like "playing with yourself".
Seriously, no title, no sale. How do you know he didn't have a lien on the car and after you take it and do some work, someone comes around and says that it is theirs? How do you know it isn't STOLEN? If you sell me your car and it has a replacement title, we go to the DMV and clear it up. No title means that I give you $100 and you bring it into my chop shop and we cut it up.
