Economic importance of tourism in Kerala
‘Tourism is fourth dimension of modern economics’ said Andre Siedfried, a famous scholar. The economic inter-relation of tourism with other industries and its implications have been a subject of considerable discussion since the advent of mass tourism in Kerala, and studies have been made on the various aspects of the economic impact produced by this industry.
Mass tourism has led to phenomenal changes in the landscape and also in the hospitality sector in Kerala and in other parts of the country. Some of the major contributions from tourism include: • It is an important generator of national income • It is a means for earning foreign exchange • It provides employment to thousands of people • It acts as a catalyst to economic development Tourism’s economic dynamics call for a somewhat detailed examination in a state like Kerala. In spite of the presence of cultural artifacts and other places of historic interest, perhaps none of the tourist centers in South India could attract so many tourists like the state of Kerala. Kerala’s achievements in the travel and tourist trade have much to do with its bio diversity and the salubrious climate. Newer tourist destinations are now emerging and thus a tourist on a maiden visit to the state has much to explore and most of the time, he may not find much time to move on to other centers. In Kerala backwater tourism is a new entrant. It has already made waves in the hitherto ignored neglected part of the state. Land prices in and around the backwaters have gone up phenomenally, thanks to the developments in the tourism sector. With each passing year more entrepreneurs are now entering into this hot sector. Even though the last tourism season did not help much, due to the global recession, there was a significant rise in visits from the domestic tourist. |
