Teaching teens to drive

My daughter just turned 15. In Colorado, a teenager must take a basic driver ed course to get a learning permit. Anyone have any experience with Master Drive? It's a company that offers the courses. Their website has no info on schedule or cost and a call to the company put me on the phone with a 'coach' who, after 10 minutes, had still not yet told me when their classes meet or how much they cost. Don't know why anyone would trust their kids driving skills to these idiots. Rant over.
Anyway, I think I'm going to sign my daughter up for an online driver ed class so she can get a permit. Beyond that, how many of you have taught your children to drive yourself as opposed to sending your child to a driving school?

I have personally did the drivers ed with all three of my kids, and they did not have any problems passing the test. - two of the three are decent drivers. Something new that has just started is Tire Racks - Street Survival for teen drivers. Looks very good and affordable. They have about 60 locations they are doing right now.

I went to driving school and I'm glad I did. My dad doesn't have the patience, plus your parents teach you all the bad habits they have picked up.

Without using google can you tell me how your supposed to grip the wheel? Official DMV test way I mean.

Arrow Don't have *anyone* learn to do this. Especially female teens.

I taught my little sister how to drive in the 420sel. It was big and we did pop a few curbs, but she is an ok driver now.

my wife just did her driver test in my Excursion, at least get her a Honda to take the test in..... she passed of course, but I think the tester was quite taken by her which got her a speech at the end about the several rolled stops and no turn signals instead of a fail.

Nope its not 10 and 2 anymore. Its 9 and 3, cars have airbags and 10 and 2 is to high.

If you put 10 and 2 down on the written part its wrong.

Oh geeze, is your daughter your oldest child?

I ask this because I was the oldest child and I obviously was the first to drive. In PA you get your permit when you turn 16 and after 6 months with 48 hours of road time (with some night time driving) you're eligible for your road test to get a Cinderella license.

Driver's ed was a program offered after school by the school district in my town. Since I was one of the few kids with my license I finished the road test first before the classroom instruction was offered.

Personally I am glad I took it. The teacher was really into it (for some odd reason) and had instructional material that covered vehicles from my era (1985 ), but even information on newer vehicles.

He even took us outside to show us how to change a tire.

Here are a couple of things I learned in driver's ed that I used in real life:

1. On my way back from Ithaca last year during thanksigiving my friend was driving us in her little pontiac with all season tires. I could feel the rear wheels slipping and I knew she didn't have anti lock breaks. Well outside of Salamanca we spun out and nearly ran into a truck and median. We were ok and so was the car so we continued on our trek going at a slow 40 mph with blinkers on. The advice I gave her (breaking pumping and coasting amongst other things) helped keep her calm.

2. Another girl I dated had break failure on the highway. One of the things I remember telling her was to calm down and put the car into a lower gear. I did not know you could slow down a car by down shifting until after driver's ed.

I feel that driver's ed is one of the most important classes teen driver's can take.

I sadly don't know anything about that company, but I wanted to throw my 14 cents in (adjusted for inflation).

.
Only child. In Colorado, you have to have a permit for a year, plus 50 yrs of supervised driving to get a license. You can get a permit at 15 if you take this pre-driving class and then after one year, you can get your license. Otherwise everything starts at 16. I'm not opposed to driver ed classes in school since I took one, but these pre-driving classes are a different thing. I'm not opposed to teaching my daughter and I'm sure I'll teach her things she wont get in driver ed (like how to jump terminals 1 and 3 in the junction box on a 123 diesel if the starter won't engage) but I know that having non-parents teach kids can sometimes be a wise choice since obviously parents of teenagers don't know anything.
I'm pretty sure that even if she takes driver ed, no one's going to take her out into an empty parking lot on a snowy day and make her lose control in every possible way so I know that job will fall on my shoulders.
