Unsecured wireless

We had dinner with friends Sunday and they tell us of a stranger reported by neighbors sitting in his car near their home during the day last week. One neighbor noticed the guy had a laptop and would show up for a short period of time. Fortunatlely the neighbor got the plate and an accurate description to report to the police. He was not seen since.

I asked if their wireless was secure and they said it was not, FIOS was installed last month.

For those who do not have secure wireless there are creeps out there downloading all kinds of improper material. Please make sure you are secure.

They can get on the net but they shouldnt be able to easily get into your personal files right. Maybe he was just surfing the web.

Secure your network with nothing less than WPA, disable SSID broadcast and if possible use MAC filtering. Wifi hackers use Wifi to download and share illegal media, so if your friends have the police standing at their door with a search warrant looking for child porn sent from their IP address they will know why.

WPA is good, WPA2 is better. Not broadcasting the SSID may deter passerbys but not persistent hackers. MAC addresses can be spoofed. You could be surprised what a resourceful hacker can do.

I live in an apartment complex...so, I guess I'm sorta safe with a lot of "unsecure" networks around, and ours is secure and unbroadcasted. Who knows...

Wireless is simple...but it's nowhere near as safe as using a simple cable that you can keep an eye on yourself.

The FiOS installer should have secured the network. See if they will come back and secure it. Or do it yourself...it's fairly easy.

Sorry, no. This got better with the latest service packs of windows XP... but I can guess that 90% of you here don't have a password set for the administrator account on your computers. Or a good password set up on your normal account.

If you have poor wireless security you have effectively taken an Ethernet cable and strung it out to your mailbox.
