Billions in US aid never reached Pakistan army

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/as_wasted_aid_to_pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – The United States has long suspected that much of the billions of dollars it has sent Pakistan to battle militants has been diverted to the domestic economy and other causes, such as fighting India.

Our tax money used quite nicely.

Made news here a couple days ago. Somewhat surprisingly, it's Pakistani generals blowing the whistle.

I think you'll find America's shock at this very underwhelming.

Of course, they would fund a dictatorship to go against a democracy. Not surprising at all. The Pakistani generals blew the whistle because they didn't get the much needed arms which was supposed to be the package. F-16s to fight terrorists on ground, etc. etc.

I read a few days ago in either Natl Geographic or Smithsonian that projects such as road building in Afganistan which are funded by us or international money are contracted out to contractors who often end up paying
"protection" money to the Taliban and the money then is used to buy munitions to fight agiainst the US.

Ughhhh!

The perils of trying to operate in a stone age country when equipped with our sense of ethics and propriety.

We don't get it. In fact we don't get it in such a huge way that we don't even know we don't get it.

Not to mention the fact that US was supplying with weapons this very same Taliban to fight against USSR....later on they started using the very same weapons against American troops

The CIA visiting all the war-lords with brief-cases stuffed with millions of dollars in cash to buy the stingers back they supplied to the Mujahideen.

The Taliban didn't exist during the USSR occupation in Afghanistan and had no part in fighting the Russians. The Taliban got his origin in the Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan. And are active since 1994, 5 years after the withdrawal of the Soviets.

After Ahmad Shah Dostum's assassination, Mujahideen morphed into what is now Taliban. Its the same guys, different name. When there is a ban on terrorist outfits, they just change into a different name.

It's a little more complicated.

Definitely, the part India gets attacked and has lost around 60,000 lives, that too sponsored by US definitely is complex. Some of very good officers have paid with their lives and when you read stuff like this, I can only imagine what their families feel.

OK the Taliban didn't exist with the name Taliban...its the same people with different names. As you pointed out US sponsored them, later they turn against US. You can call it any way you want but the bottom line is the same. The weapons US provided are the same weapons that kill US troops.

Be thankful that the handful of Stingers left are either defunct or have gone bad, otherwise those F-16s and helicopters would bear the brunt of stings from those Stingers.

Politics is a very fluid thing. Today, you are my friend. Tomorrow, you are my enemy. It all depends on WIIFM. What's In It For ME. That is the key question. As I have often said, it doesn't matter that our Prez got the Nobel Prize, it doesn't matter that we have become the most admired country. All it matters when you are asking someone to do something is his question of WIIFM. Basically, it is Pavlov's Dog all over and people don't seem to see that. Ring the bell and the dog drools because he knows he is getting something to eat. All that admiration doesn't account for a good cheeseburger because the other guy is going to ask you WIIFM. If you can give him something, you do business. If not, you can take that admiration and go fawk yourself.
