Just Had to kick in my own door

Just had to kick in my own door to the basement bedroom after the dogs somehow locked themselves in. Turns out modern doors have cardboard inside of them.

I'll glue it back together and swap it with the storage room door. One side was mostly undamaged, so it can face the hallway and look presentable. The presentation of the unfinished storage room won't suffer much.

It was a last resort after spending way too much time trying to pick the lock. Didn't realize going for "industrial" looking door handles meant industrial strength.

Bentley reluctantly posed for a photo while Dino hasn't left his cage since the incident. I'll make him a peanut butter sandwich in a bit.

Wow didn't your door have one of those holes you can stick a flat head screw driver into and unlock it?

No, just a pinhole size opening. No need to tell me I'm a dummy now. Its done.

I saw the innards of a door like that once. I could see how corrugated cardboard of the right type would be good enough to stiffen up a light weight interior door.

I've encountered some door locks like that that should have been a lot easier to work than they were.

If I didn't want to sound like a dummy I'd guess that that's some standard poodle action.

I think it's probably better that interior doors do break easily. No real security value if they don't.

Sorry about the door but you really need to learn how easy it is to use a credit card to open a locked door.

I know how you feel. On the first morning in my new home I managed to lock myself in the basement. After a half hour of "Macgyver" tactics I kicked the door. The previous owner installed solid doors and exterior door hardware on the basement doors but the jamb gave way first. With Gorilla glue and new door trim it was back to new.

A key is now hidden in the basement.

bummer, I almost did the same to my bathroom door after the 5 yr old swung it closed after the wall pushed the lock button. I had the little screwdriver thingy and tried for 20 minutes to get it to bite and turn the lock. after walking away I tried again and as I was pushing harder to get it engaged it unlocked. turns out this type of lock just needs to be pushed not turned.

Don't doors like that cost less than $75ish usually anyways? That would not have worked at my parents house (circa 1947) the doors are all quite solid wood. It would work where I currently live though....the interior doors are hollow like that.

You can lock yourself in the basement? I'm sorry, I just get this image of a, "It puts the lotion on" scenario.

Works on interior doors that have a catch that will move inward when the door locks.

A decent exterior lock has a small additional brass tab that remains compressed when the door is closed. If this tab is compressed, the catch will not retract. It's an interesting design, and it requires a careful fit between door and jamb. If the door closes too far and this small tab enters the recess for the catch, the concept fails.
