Political views of public school teachers

Should we allow public school teachers to incorporate their political views as curriculum?

In what may come as a surprise to people who know me, I voted yes. However, it is a very qualified yes. Teachers should be allowed to make their own political views known to their classes, but only if they clearly communicate that the views they express are their own personal opinion. This can be a productive thing at the high school and possibly junior high (or whatever they're calling it now) levels. Not so much in K-5 though.

Skippy- you misread the question- talking about as part of a discussion what you as a teacher believes in high school is far different than curriculum.

I answered no, but somehow everything these days is viewed as a political view these days. I mean simple things like wanting clean lakes and cycling advocacy have their own specific group of haters.

I simply look them in the eye, and say: BUT I AM BLACK!!! You should see the look on their faces. I look very white, you would never know by looking, but I have black ancestry. So far it has diffused the situation every time I've tried it. Sometimes they even chuckle, as I explain my ancestry. "Wait, but you don't look black"? I am in fact, 1/8th black, and 1/8th Native American. I have former slaves on my family tree. Then German/Austrian, French, Scottish and Irish.

Wait, what was the topic again?

An education needs to be well rounded and not be spoon feed bland facts from 8-3.

To be well rounded you need to hear both sides of the argument. You won't get that with simple memorization.

Most children inherent their political views from their parents anyway so teachers attempting to indoctrine a different viewset is useless anyway. Even in a primary educational setting, a teacher should be able spout highly political junk he or she sees fit. Let the kid go home and ask mommy or daddy why.

Learning takes place at school and home.

I personally look forward to the day I can tell my kid why Mrs. Cheney is 100% wrong on whatever stance she took.

I wouldn't want a complete unbiased education. Pointing out bias, being politically incorrect, and hearing staunce political ideas is a great way to learn how to see through BS.

If a parent doesn't like it, homeschooling is definitely a valid option.

There should be a 3rd choice: It is impossible for anyone to completely remove their opinion from a discussion, therefore the NO choice is an impossibility.

I am for teachers presenting an opportunity for kids to come to their own ill conceived, incomplete opinions they fully believe in. I have utterly believed foolish things in high school, and I'm glad I had the opportunity.

I am against things like what happened to a kid here in Ohio, who had a cross burned into his arm by his teacher because the kid recognized evolution is real.

You just insulted almost everyone here on OD. Those seem to be the only topics we discuss!

I believe that political issues need to be part of any HS curricula. However, the teachers need to be very careful NOT to lobby their own POV. They need to present arguments on both sides. If they are unable to make a fair statement that is contrary to their own views, then maybe they shouldn't be teachers; they should be politicians.

Its about teaching; NOT indoctrinating.

Way back in the 1960s when i was in HS, my government teacher was quite the liberal, but her classroom presentations were very fair. She did not abuse her position to indoctrinate; Anyone bringing an argument that was not logical could expect to be the subject of her critical attention.

I had an English teacher n 8th/9th grade who would just moderate the discussions. Every now and then he would just toss out a topic and let us go at it. We had a diverse group of students in the class. I do not recall him really partaking all that much in the discussions if at all. He kept us from going nuts and that was about it. Learned more in those classes than any other.

I voted no, their job is to teach you how to think, not what to think. they can present facts and in subjects where there are differing sides of a discussion they should present both with equal exposure. K-6 this is particularly important as these ages take what is said more as a recorder then a tool for their own thought
