Alaskan fishing trips...

Anyone ever do one? I'm trying to plan a cool trip for next year for me and my dad. I want to catch some seriously big Alaskan salmon in some vrigin waters.

Orvis has some cruises, but to plan a trip with them you have to be ready to spend at least $10k a head....can't afford that yet. However they do have a Galapagos trip on a yacht that looks like the experiance of a lifetime!

http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=28XT3110&dir_id=958&group_id=3025&cat_id=5880&subcat_id=6752
I can't wait until I can afford something like this!

I worked with a guy that did a fishing trip to Alaska and as I remember he flew to Anchorage and then was met by small plane that took him and some other people to a lodge on a lake and guides took them out each day for a week. I think he paid well under $5k and more like $2k for the entire trip.

There's places like this

If it was me I'd rather go to the Galapagos anyway.

Save the 10k, invest it, and one day buy your own yacht and go wherever you damn well please.

Another option is Yellowstone National park.

I'm about 20 years away from spending that kind of money on a trip.

If it's a fishing trip that you want how about going some where in the San Juan islands, it would probably be cheaper.

Be careful when planning...

A trip with my father to a really remote Alaskan camp is something I've always wanted to do - go for it, just ask opinions and recommendations of others that have been to the camp before (recently).

My neighbor goes every year... he goes to Sitka, AK - says that the salmon numbers there have been declining.... also he didn't hardly catch any halibut like years before in Homer - maybe it was just a bad year. Spoke with another angler (who's a seasoned fly fisherman) and he said that the salmon were plentiful where he went, but it was mostly casting into a roiling pool of fish and foul-hooking them... then horsing them in - he said it wasn't his kind of fishing, so it just depends on what you want to experience. Also, Alaska is remote but some of the fishing destinations can get pretty crowded at peak season, so figure out what you want and don't want. For me, I don't wanna travel to Alaskan wilderness so I can fish elbow-to-elbow with bunch of other fisherman.... but that's just me.

I think I would rather to go British Columbia near the coast - for either salmon or preferably stealhead that come up the rivers in the fall/winter.

Sounds like fun though - it kind of gets me excited to go out and fish this weekend...

James

I can fish elbow to elbow right here in CT. If I'm going to Alaska I want to fish with just me, my dad and a guide...thats it. I don't want there to be another human being for miles.

http://www.fishinglakeontario.com/ It isn't Alaska but you can save some serious cash and still have a hell of a time. I try to go in the fall a fish right off the pier. Here is a another good link : http://nyfisherman.net/chinooksalmonarticle.html

Have you considered doing a float/raft trip down one of the rivers with a guide(s)?! If you want to get away and be in pristine wilderness and take in all the scenery and fish to your heart's content that may be a good thing to do - but you must be reasonably fit to do that trip. And remember to not put butter on your forehead before going to sleep in the tent....

There are plenty of places to do that in Michigan.

Like Paul said Alaska is for the bugs, if you like swatting at no-seeums and prefer rain over sunshine it may be the place for you.

Go to lake Lliamna, fish normally and if your lucky you can try to catch the 'monster' and make a fortune off of it.

(I'd put my money on it actually being a large Sturgeon)

Yellowstone sounds cool but I think I'd rather go to Yosemite.

Yeah but Alaska has more of an exotic aura around it. MI is just well another state.

Anyway I think were going to do a national park tour instend, with some fishing at various points.
