What would we be doing if we had no oil?
Arguing about ANWR? Nope
War in Iraq? Probably not Recycling Plastics? Nah Imagine a world without oil. Almost seems peaceful.

I'd be curious to see what it would be like here on earth without oil... No cars and such... Be weird... I'd like to think peacful also but us humans always find something to fight about

There'd still be WVO for Diesels and Lovecraft would be as big as Microsoft. My ilk would hang out in the wood fired Stanley Steamer forum

Starvation and conflict!
Everyone would be starving in short order as modern agriculture is highly dependent on hydrocarbons and there is virtually no way for the population as it now exists to feed itself. There would be no peace as starvation would cause mass conflict in short order. People in the northern latitudes would be the first to go hungry because the local food sources are virtually non-existent for the next 6-8 months and there would be no food coming from anywhere else.

Are you talking about never having oil? Suddenly running out or just how we would deal with a steady decline?
Could be like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4TdPxOXuYw Or maybe this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjqciEtCnks

In this alternate universe, there would simply not be the vast populations of humans there are now. Perhaps 10% to 30% of the people currently alive would be here. The planet would probably be far more pristine, and those who are alive would probably be roughly around the iron age for technological and cultural development.
As a population we would probably be far more conservative, and may never have outgrown the age of lords. |

I was thinking never ever having had oil at all. We could be using silicone cups and plates, plastics made of corn, maybe even harnessed solar and wind power efficiently.

The steam engine was attributed as the start of the industrial revolution and it was powered by coal and wood. But crude oil had many uses for centuries before people started to refine it. It was used for lamps, water proofing, some medicines and other purposes.
I’m gonna modify my previous statement. The first oil wells were made in the 1850s. Based on that, the use of coal would have probably slowed the growth of fossil fuels, but the path would have been largely the same. I don’t think our culture would have gotten to silicone production as quickly were it not for very inexpensive and broadly available fuel. |

I hope we don't run out yet, I don't have enough ammo stockpiled to form a Madmax style group.

Industrial expansion would have been slightly less, with more reliance on agriculture and coal. More mass transportation. Less cars. Less highways. Mostly diesels and electrics, and maybe air powered cars would be common.

If nobody had oil but Iraq, their would probably still have been a war with Saddam Hussein.
The reason there are wars in the Persian Gulf has more to do with the fact that oil provides money and power. This enables otherwise ineffective governments, led by evil dictators to wage war. There is no point in fighting wars, for oil. Ample supplies of oil are going to make it onto world markets anyway. I doubt it would make any difference at all, in the long run, even if North America and Europe stopped using energy completely. The resulting lower prices, would simply encourage developing nations to use more. You can hold me to these words, because we are going to get to see this play out, over the next 20-30 years. America will no longer need to import oil, because our cars will get 300mpg. We'll also be using solar and nuclear to power our homes and industry. Really, we won't need to be importing 1 drop of imported oil. Yet countries in Asia, and Africa will continue using more. Resource rich countries, with evil dictators and ideologies, will continue to threaten global security. We will still end up having some very horrendous wars!
