The Internet is useful in terms of information for finding out, say, how to do an oil change on your car. Or to view a video of what happens to a bottle o Coke when you drop a Mentos into it.

Past that...it's all down to the source.

This video clip is so heavily biased, you should watch it sitting at a 90-degree angle.

There is no 'perfect' health care system. However, the rumors about Canadians waiting months for critical care are essentially complete BS at this point. If you are critically ill, care is immediate. The quality of Canadian health care is as good as anywhere in the world in terms of infrastructure and technology.

I swear that journalism should be an earned privilege, and not a 'right'.

I have a serious question for you (and Jlomon, you can pitch in too!)...

How is YOUR HC paid for up there?

Are your bank accounts tethered to the National Treasury? Is money taken from your accounts without your sayso? How are you notified of impending deductions? Are you even notified?

Do you have a "prior agreement" that settles the yearly "premium" for deductions, or are the deductions at the whim of the National Medical Insurance Czar (or whatever you folks have up there in Canada...).

Or, do you just have a "bit" taken out of your paychecks each payday?

Down here, the booberment wants us to hand over our back accounts and leave it to them to decide what each individual taxpayer is going to HAVE TO "CHIP IN" for themselves, and everyone else...

That's for starters...at least that's what we're getting ready to do...

People seem to be worried about the visible threats. What you are talking about is 2 issues. First, people think of the govt as part of the fairy tale where the good woodcutter comes along and fixes Little Red Riding Hood's problems and goes away without asking for a thing in return. Like in the fairy tale, they will be willing to give the woodcutter what he wants. Secondly, you are only talking about the visible costs. What about the invisible costs that might be more? What happens when the new fund has issues because they have been raiding it and now it needs to be bailed out?

In Ontario, medical coverage is provided by OHIP - The Ontario Health Insurance Plan. It is paid for by taxes from residents and businesses alike. Ontario residents pay both provincial and federal taxes and portions of this go towards Health Care.

Essentially how much you end up paying is proportional to your overall taxes - and hence tax and income brackets.

Though we pay a substantial amount of taxes - and healthcare is very expensive in this regard - I would not change it for anything. I am fully supportive of our system.

You mean...like all the existing "band-aids" we have out there, right now, that are suppose to address the HC issues?

Welfare
SSI

AFAIK, none of those programs have been slated for execution...so I guess, as a Nation (or better yet, the TAXPAYERS) will continue to pay for those programs AND the launch of just another program that's suppose to cure all that ills and leaves you with shiney white teeth and minty-fresh breathe...

I'm starting to think of the famous quote from Patrick Henry's speech at Richmond, VA., during a court hearing in 1775...

Do you have a sampling of your tax brackets? Just curious what you're currently paying in vs. what you're able to make.

Now, how would that compare? It wouldn't...you'd need to show pre- and post- Canadian HC figures for taxation. And I have no idea when Canada went to the National/Provincial HC System... (Each Providence has its own system, or is a National System?)

We have a lot of band aids that fix things today but who knows what will happen tomorrow. Take the Bush-Obama bailouts. We can see the tab and we think that it is worth it. HOWEVER, the message we send is that we will reward incompetence for a short term gain so we don't have to bite the bullet today. Kinda like if we know your son's a lying thief but you insist on saving him from jail today. All you are doing is enabling him and telling him you will fix things for him tomorrow when he moves on to bigger and more expensive problems.

Think about this. Which is more popular? To go to a bar and toss a roll of C-notes to the bartender and declare "Drinks on me!" or to tell the crowd that you are taking back your offer of free drinks?

Apparently, people think that being master of their fate is too much.

I crunched the numbers for the Canadian national tax with the Ontario province tax. It came out to 40%. Next checked the property tax rates, their rates by province go from slightly lower to one fifth of California rates.

Next subtracted what the employer pays , I paid and the deductibles and broke about even, without the snow. A family of four would do much better (just add up the HI cost of your lovely deductibles). If you made 30-50K you costs would be about 25% less.

If you are chronically ill the difference would be ginormous. Denied prescriptions and services for my father were $80K in the last year of his life.
