Pigeon abatement

A client of mine has a rental with some unwelcome attention from pigeons. Two years ago, a remodel put part of a porch roof a couple feet above the previous smaller roof. Not the best design, but there it is. Pigeons like the small covered space with room for nests. It's at the side of the house, and beaucoup pigeon droppings fall on the sidewalk which leads to the rear apt.

I put stainless steel pigeon spikes from Home Depot in the small roof area that is covered and at the point of entry to those spots. Not sure yet how well it's working. The house next door has some phone or power lines under the eves (2 story) where the pigeons also like to hang out. That side of the walkway is even more covered in droppings.

My employer says the guy is a slumlord, will never do anything about it so she wants me to see what I can do, unannounced, which I'm willing to do. Will do him a favor as his house is coated with pigeon guano in spots and it can't be helping the wiring to have 4 or 5 pigeons on it.

I gather that such areas can be netted off so that the pigeons can't get their perch. I'm thinking to screw on some strips of wood holding the netting to the house about a foot below the power-lines, and angling it up to be attached the eves with more strips. I'll get stainless screws that will only penetrate about 5/8ths into the siding.

Anybody done it?

I've not had much success in pigeon abatement so whatever works for you, might also be helpful for me. I've tried wire screening and carpet tack strips. They found ways around those two tactics.

My challenge should be easier, I'm hoping, than the OP in that thread. The wires I want to fence off are close to the house, and close to the eves. It appears that the pigeons much prefer covered spaces. I only need netting about 20 feet long and 2 feet wide to enclose the area. I don't think they'll try to perch semi-upside down on the netting.

No, this is the challenge I face, I assure you. I like this client. She has good confidence in me and she doesn't argue about the bill. And she owns 5 properties.

But I would be interested in hearing about the show you mention.

Sorry Dude, but your story sounded just like a case on The Peoples Court that I watched on Wednesday, No Harm, No "Foul".

On my old house there were ledges where pidgeons loved to nest etc. I got a pellet gun and shot pidgeons off my house for about a year and a half. Finally they stopped coming there.

Pidgeons are pretty smart little critters. Once you have shot at them and missed they are very hard to get a shot at. They have excellent eyesight and are pretty smart, imho.

I used to be a slumlord. We had roofrats causing all manner of destruction to the roofs and eaves of some rentals.

We tried the spiked wire, smart bastards soon learned how to work around it.

What finally worked was a "control" substance called Avatroll or some such. It would be mixed with bread and corn which they would eat. Apparently it wacked out their central nervous system, the crazed birds would fly into buildings and windows and commence staggering like they were intoxicated and disoriented. Bad Ju Ju for the roofrats, specially when the feral cats and red tailed hawks picked off the stoned birds.

That is sorta wild. What, did one guy put something on his neighbor's house to keep pigeons away and the neighbor didn't like it?

The damned stainless steel spikes are not cheap. $49 for 10 feet of the stuff. Stainless steel is spendy in general. I've been thinking that they will find a way around it.

Not sure I'd want to be shooting a pellet gun in East Oakland, as this house isn't far from some active crime spots. Oakland is a trip. Some nice neighborhoods and nice houses with rough trade a few blocks away. I've thought about using my blowgun (also illegal in Cal) as it's much quieter than my pellet gun. Shoots 3 inch long spears hard enough so that I have to use pliers to pull them out of plywood.

The space between the houses is sorta secluded so with the silence of the blowgun, I could probably get away with it.

I might try that.

Silence it.

Or you could try one of the Gamo "whisper" air rifles. They are supposedly pretty quiet. I'm about to try and manufacture a silencer for my Crossman 1000 air rifle so I can shoot it in my back yard. I believe that would be your best bet. You can actually kill pigeons with a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun if you are good enough.

For pest control IMHO you can't beat a good pellet gun. They work on just about everything. Shoot them enough and they should start to stay away. At least it works for the geese.
