Oh CSPI, Will There Be Nothing Left to Enjoy?
Movie Popcorn and a Soda = Three Quarter Pounders
A laboratory analysis of snacks sold at U.S. cinemas and commissioned by the Center for Science and Public Interest (CSPI) found a medium popcorn and soft drink contained 1,160 calories and three days' worth -- 60 grams -- of saturated fat. |

Now, if I go to the theatre EVERY DAY for the next 10 years, I'll be either;
1.) 500 lbs., with a Handicap Parking Tag for my rear-view mirror, located in a G-30 Chevy Van, cause I won't fit into anything Mercedes... OR... 2.) I fit comfortably in a wooden box (or urn...as in burn!) by year 5. REALLY...how often does anyone go to movies these days? Other than when we were MUCH YOUNGER (some of us, about 25-30 years ago... ) maybe once or twice every 2 or 3 months or so. My case? I go, maybe, 2-3 times a year...if that.And I don't care for anywhere near the amount of butter on my popcorn that the theatre puts on a regular popcorn...more times than not, I order it plain and put my own salt on it. Lately, the theatre has had a "flavored salt" display (Cajun, cinnamon, various cheeze flavored, etc...) set off to the side to provide an "interesting" alternative to just plain salt...(haven't even read the ingredients, let alone tasted any of it... )BTW...the last time I went to some flick (I think it was the last STAR TREK celuloid...with the kids as Kirk, Spock, Scotty and the gang as pups at the academy...), the X and I brought our own "goodies" from home...we bought our sodas from the theatre and I got a unadulterated SMALL popcorn from the counter...and the whole thing (movie tickets and drinks w/the popcorn) ran me about $33.00. Now, if I trimmed back the popcorn and didn't even order that (Remember a few years back about the fact that the OIL they were cooking the corn in was laced with something that HELL couldn't handle... ), I'd still be in some sort of FINANCIAL HELL 'cause even going to the movies is going to bankrupt you unless you win the fricken' lottery.Bottom line? "Killer Popcorn" is a scare...and that's it. You've got to have a ticket to eat it. That alone may keep the human population safe from itself... I wonder if "O-Care" has a dollar limit set up for Theatre-Eaters? We may soon know...

I don't know about you, but I'd rather have three quarter-pounders (with cheese, please) to enjoy with a movie than a bucket of popcorn with fake butter. Better be a long movie though.
I'm with you on needing the ticket, mgburg. I haven't been inside of a movie theater in over five years, and have no plans to go in the future. Theaters are full of teenagers. No thanks. I just heard this on the radio on the way home from the rifle range: "We have plenty of youth. Why can't there be a fountain of smart?" |
