Here is the thing....


"sterling service" came up in a conversation about computer junk... And he was adamant that is was not related to table settings.



So i googled it, and the following came back...

It is a descriptive phrase that's not meant to be taken literally, similar to one of the following-

"It's raining like cats and dogs."

"It's like the surface of the sun out there."

I don't think you really need to treat it as a special phrase. How about just suggesting that he look up the word, "sterling" in a dictionary?
