Has anyone tried quinoa?
We cooked some on Thanksgiving with sautéed squash and onions, and it was very good. It gets prepared like rice but is done in half the time, and is much more nutritious. Originally from South America and now at Costco in 4-lb bags.

Gma uses it....I dont cook much. Goes with about anything that you would use rice or cooked grains with. Is better favored with a broth IMO.

Yes - our Indian friends have introduced us to it - I really like it. We have it now and then - very tasty.

I ate it for a while - it's tasty and said to be very nutritious. I might try some again but I recall being less than thrilled with the smallness of it. Rice has a little more heft to it. Easier for me to chew.

My wife was from Peru and we always used to bring it back from there, though it was sometimes seen in South American specialties stores around th San Francisco bay area so likely you can get it in LA, Miami and NY where Peruvians live in some numbers.
It is totally different in taste, from anything i ever had, looks like rice, and cooks VERY thick and as I recall, I believe we fried it with butter and ate it in San Francisco a bit, where we lived. I miss it. The Peruvians that live in the high Andes thrive on it, it is VERY nutritious, and the land up there is VERY hardscrabble and unforgiving, I have seen it a lot. There are a lot of utterly amazing foods from SOUTH AMERICA that are very good - taste very good - and are good for you. I miss them, and seldom pass the chance to go to an Argentine, Peruvian or Chilean restaurant.

Mrs. Eskimo makes a very tasty vegetarian quinoa stew. It's on the menu with some regularity.

I've never heard of the stuff til just a few weeks ago. I wonder why its not more popular in our supposedly health-conscious society.

I have, it is good. Kind of a "dirty" flavor though, havent tried adding chicken broth to it yet. It's a complete protein so its popular with vegans/veggies.
Certainly helped the Incans build their huge empire in S. America!

I'd say because it has a strong flavor. Americans tend to like blander foods.

by the way, you could also try millet (like millions of africans) buckwheat, brown basmati rice ( very nutty in flavor- yum!) red wheat...

Quinoa(keen-wa) has got to be just about one of the greatest foods on the planet. Yes, I love it. I have used it for breakfast, lunch and dinners. Try cooking it with chicken broth and turmeric.
As one poster pointed out it is a perfect protein and contains many amino acids that your body needs for proper function. Roughly 3x everything that a quality brown rice has to offer. About a year ago Oprah put it on her best foods list and the price skyrocketed. My advice to you is QUIT BUYING IT! Although it is very good for you, DO NOT TRY IT! I am hoping the price will return to pre-Oprah levels.
