I go to all three every year to check, just in case.

There was a recommendation to get your free annual report from each company in a rolling 4 month interval as a way to more frequently check the data. Every four months request a report from a different company. The data is mostly common to each reporting company and the 4 month interval works good as a more frequent fraud check than getting all three reports in one shot.

Good idea. I am probably too lazy for all that effort though!

I hate that one has to pay attention to credit reports due to identity theft concerns. I have no interest in my "credit rating" because I'm done borrowing money, but these folks have created an entire industry based on this silly number. I believe there is some way of "locking" your credit reports to prevent anyone from accessing them without your specific permission; I should look onto that.

I checked my report. It had 48 entries. all Clean but two:

1. my second mortgage on my home showed a late payment this year. My bookkeeper says that we never received a notice for that payment. I told that bank that and I believe they agreed not to report it.

2. the other one is a collection from a bad debt place from the county library. I cannot imagine what it is for. I have not set foot in the library in years.

I filed a challange on the website for both of them. Do you all think a lender would be influenced by these?

One of the credit bureaus said I would have to call in to get my report from them.

The third shows four potentially damaging items. I looked for the way to protest them but could not figure it out.

Think I need to pursue that?

If they don't like the report on one credit bureau will they look at the other two? Is it unusual to have a different set of potential negatives on different sites?

Yeah it's called freezing your credit. You have to call all 3 agencies and tell them you want your credit frozen. Basically when this happens you will be denied for any new line of credit until you unfreeze them (which is a simple phone call).

I have to do it for experian every semester for Citi to release my student loans.

Thanks, I should do that. I don't need/want credit and I certainly don't want anyone else to have access.

I'm pretty sure it is a 5 year lock. You would have to do it again in 5 years.

I'm with you on that. I plan on borrowing money one more time in my life on the house I will be purchasing some time in the next year (with 20% down). Actually, technically I won't be doing the borrowing since it will all be in my wife's name since my ex-wife ruined my credit score by deciding to stop paying some things that had my name on them as well. Life lessons learned...

Yup, I think you can "unlock" it for specific transactions.

Yup. Dave Ramsey recommends locking it, from what I recall in listening to his national radio show.

I don't borrow money either, so my 801 score has probably dropped - to what, I could not care less. I have no need to borrow - at least not in this lifetime. That said, to receive the lowest insurance rates, one still needs to maintain whatever the minimum is that insurance companies use to rate and price your policies.

That would be the late fees for the book, "101 Ways to Increase Your Memory Power" which has been lying on the coffee table for the last couple of years.
