Why they don't just put us under anaesthesia?

I think that it will be much better if they just put all the travelers under anesthesia during the flight, so we don't need cabin crew and they can charge us for the drugs as well...they will make even more money and we will become less of a security risk.... Our personal freedom is getting out of our hands.

Airlines: New rules keep passengers in seats

WASHINGTON – Some airlines are telling passengers that new security regulations prohibit them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing.
Air Canada said in a statement Saturday that new rules imposed by the Transportation Security Administration limit on-board activities by passengers and crew in U.S. airspace.
The airline said that during the final hour of flight passengers must remain seated. They won't be allowed access to carry-on baggage or to have any items on their laps.
Flight attendants on some domestic flights are informing passengers of similar rules.
Authorities say a passenger on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam attempted to start a fire as the plane prepared to land in Detroit on Friday.

If the flying public had any balls they wouldn't let the airlines do this.

I still fail to see how forcing everyone to sit in detention is going to stop a real terrorist attack? hmm maybe they won't want to break the rules and won't reach for their guns or knifes?

I really can't get over how stupid the airlines are.

Government, anyone?

Statement by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano

Release Date: December 26, 2009

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
Contact: 202-282-8010

"I am grateful to the passengers and crew aboard Northwest Flight 253 who reacted quickly and heroically to an incident that could have had tragic results. The Department of Homeland Security immediately put additional screening measures into place—for all domestic and international flights—to ensure the continued safety of the traveling public. We are also working closely with federal, state and local law enforcement on additional security measures, as well as our international partners on enhanced security at airports and on flights.

The American people should continue their planned holiday travel and, as always, be observant and aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior or activity to law enforcement officials.

Passengers flying from international locations to U.S. destinations may notice additional security measures in place. These measures are designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same thing everywhere. Due to the busy holiday travel season, both domestic and international travelers should allot extra time for check-in."

Security Measures

Because of the incident, the U.S. authorities are asking airlines to take extra security measures worldwide, the national coordinator said earlier today. Extra searches of passengers and luggage were implemented at Schiphol.

In the U.K., passengers traveling to the U.S. were advised to leave more time to check in and limit baggage being taken on board, a spokeswoman for BAA Ltd., which operates six U.K. airports including Heathrow, wrote in an e-mail.

Transport Canada said in a statement today that passengers flying to the United States from Canada are restricted to one carry-on bag, and subject to additional searches. The measures will be in place “at least for several days,” the agency said.

Body Checks

In Australia, travelers leaving Sydney on flights to the U.S. were to undergo more stringent body and luggage checks. Melbourne Airport had received instructions from the Australian government to boost security checks, spokesman Damian Tkalec said.

Taiwan imposed additional security checks of passengers and carry-on items at gates for U.S. flights from the island’s airports, Liu Chang-hui, spokesman for the Aviation Police Office, said. Carolyn Leung, a Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. spokeswoman, said Hong Kong’s biggest carrier stepped up security screening for U.S.-bound flights on U.S. advice.

India, Canada

Indian airports “are already on high alert due to the festive season,” Rohit Katiyar, a spokesman of Central Industrial Security Force, a government agency under home ministry, said today by telephone.

In Canada, Transport Minister John Baird instructed Transport Canada and the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority “to assume a heightened state of vigilance.”

Air Canada, the country’s largest airline, advised passengers traveling to the U.S. that enhanced security measures could lead to flight delays, cancellations and missed connections.

I used to fly about 200K miles per year, now I don't fly at all if I can avoid it. Commercial travel has just become too much of a hassle. Between the security nonsense and the broke airlines, I usually prefer to drive even if it takes an extra day.

There have been rumors of having passengers fly pantless.

Yeah that'll work well. There's nothing the TSA can do to stop a determined terrorist. Again overvolting a laptop battery in checked luggage will start a fire in the cargo bay with lithium.

Try putting that out.

The cycle of paranoia and increased regulation continues. The terrorists win again.
