Conversations that make you feel smarter...

I've had two of them lately.

My mother has terminal cancer and my sister and i were discussing memorial service ideas. She said she would probably rent a banquet hall or some large room somewhere and go to Sam's Club and buy some horse de vores. I said WHAT? You mean hors D'oeuvres? I laughed and laughed.

The other day i was talking to my SO and his mother needs a heart valve replacement. He said he took her to her heart specialist. I said oh, her cardiologist? He says, no, her heart specialist. This time i did my laughing on the inside.

Feel free to post about moments that made YOU feel like the genius in the room.

Well if the point is moot you should remain mute :-)

You have opened a can of worms....
People who misuse to, two, too, your , you're, here, hear etc.
I still read what they post, and try to understand, ( and sometimes give them credit for better thought process than grammar).

"warsh" instead of "wash"
"supposebly" instead of "supposedly"
"idear" instead of "idea"

The vast majority of people who fall under the broad category of "average intelligence" do not make you feel like a genius. They simply point out the dearth of knowledge in America today. Personally, I find only frustration with the average moron.

If you want to have a conversation that makes you feel smarter, have it with someone who is clearly more intelligent than you are. There are a couple of folks on here, one in particular, that force you to really think deeply and write with precision. These are the people to effect an increase in "smarter".

That's very obvious on this forum, but I think it's because they don't spell uncommon words well.

First off, sorry to hear about the health situations with your and your SO's moms. Hope everything goes as well as it can in both instances!

Supervising a bunch of warehouse guys, a couple are H.S. graduates and several didn't make it that far, I'm faced with those conversations on a daily basis.

One that will always stick with me occurred several years ago when I was training a new employee. I was showing him the check-in process for new seed as it comes through the door. He wanted to know why a bag smelled like pickles. I explained to him that it was a bag of dill seed and dill is one of the spices used in making dill pickles. He was flabbergasted. Until I blew his mind explaining that one of the other bags he was checking in was cucumber seed, and pickles are made from soaking the cucumbers in the brine with the dill (being simplistic, of course). He just couldn't believe that both of those were grown from seed. When I asked him where he thought they came from, he said he had no idea. They were just on the shelf in the grocery store, wrapped in plastic or in a jar.

If only I had a dollar for every time I:

read "Camero" in the car classifieds

heard someone reference their pet "Rockweiller"

found an unnecessary apostrophe ("Egg's for sale," etc...) <-- This one drives me
batty.

I had an acquaintance once mention that something was a "blessing in surprise." Some things aren't worth correcting...

I could add to this list all day long and come back tomorrow with more, I am sure. Oh well.

You point out the difference between "feeling" smarter and "being" smarter.

Now you are attacking Baltimorons".

True.

One can laud over "being smarter" until they realize that their own knowledge is but a tiny fraction of the whole.

Get into the details of the design and manufacture of specific aerospace components and you'll realize how insignificant your knowledge base is. And, I include myself in that category.

There are quite a few brilliant people out there.
