Anybody have any price estimates

Two older MBs. Located in West PA. A friend asked for my estimate on what the seller should ask for these.

280 SE 1981
Approx. 180K miles but shows in the 160K's( odom. only works @ less than 50 mph )
4 Door sedan
European model. Original Euro headlamps installed with extra USA headlamps included.
Great golden green color.
Runs very well but should have tuneup.
Good tires.
Inspected 12/09.
Body looks great except rust areas in three areas on LH side approx 3-4 inches each.
A/C not working
4 Extra gold wheel covers and extra set rear seat covers.
New battery

420 SEL 1986
120K
4 Door sedan
Great skyblue color
Great engine. Runs well but should have tuneup
Will need tires soon
Inspected 12/09
Excellent body except for some rust on front bumper
A/C and radio not working
Car cover included
Needs new rotor on LH rear wheel.

Realistically in this economy, on what you disclosed, about...

A Grand for the first one, and

Two grand for the second one.

I agree with Jim B.
Maybe 2 hundred less on the '86 since the A/C doesn't work, and you really don't want $50 tires on there.

I'd love to have the engine out of that 280 if it really has 160k on it, the thing isn't even broken in yet. But with bad AC and rust, I don't even think it's worth a grand, $700 tops.

The 420 engine is highly sought after by 107 SL folks who want to turn their cow into a pony. That car is sought after for parts, you'd make more money selling it piece by piece over ebay.

I've always heard that the timing chain and guides on the 420 should be changed out at 100k miles. Is the 420 in question is still on the original chain and guides?

I forgot about the rail guides - deduct another 200

If it ticks, skip the car alltogether.

Neither would be worth buying for me. The initial repairs needed would easily exceed the value of the car.

As for an asking price, I'd be more conservative than JimB. Perhaps close to a grand for the euro just for the rariety, but I think the 420SEL is worth roughly the same, maybe $1500 tops.

A person could buy my minty turn key 300SEL in the high 4s, and its rust free, issue free, and has had at least 8k in work done to it in the last 2 years to make it near perfect. It just doesn't make sense to buy one that far gone unless you are a masochist.

Dang yall are more charitable than me, i was going to say $500 and $1200 just to get em sold without a hassle. A rusty MB is not a joy to behold in any light.

BTW I don't understand what the OP means when he says the car runs great, then the next sentence is needs tuneup. WTF?

I would deem the 280 a parts car. What rust you do see means there's 100 times more you don't. What's it worth for parts? $500 - $700.

The description came from the seller who I do not know

A friend-I do not know the seller- asked me to ballpark prices. I agree that the description appears to be contradictory. The seller is moving to South Carolina and wants to sell these cars before doing so. And, now, he is having second thoughts on one of them. I do not know which one.
