cleaning the mess of Vundo trojan

I think I have the Vundo trojan in check on my wife's PC. The HD is at the limit which is a symptom of the trojan. Was less than half full before the attack. I can't find huge files or masses of empty folders which I read is how the trojan messes with the HD. Any thoughts on how I can clean the HD without a full system restoration if in fact I have the upper hand on the trojan?

Thanks,
Sixto

Vundo is a pain in the butt.

Google malware bytes and try to run it. Also go and download the update to the Java SE runtime environment. If you have any trouble doing what I just said then start backing up everything you need and wipe the computer.

I've spent hours trying to fix vundo infections and it just isn't worth the time if the virus has messed with group policy settings.
Good luck and report back!

At this point the PC is stable. I dumped McAfee which allowed enough space to run VundoFix (found nothing) and AVG. AVG made the biggest difference restoring the HD to about 1/3 full which is where I remember it to have been. The remaining problems are a pop-up saying Windows can't find logon.exe after each start, and IE pop-ups that say the system has a virus with an offer to download security software. I'm running Ad-Aware now. Will run Malware Bytes next.

Thanks!

MalwareBytes is usually all you will need to get most jobs done, if you're still having problems the people at this site can be extremely helpful if you listen to what the tell you and do what they ask, good luck!

IF you have it....

Spybot Search & Destroy will fix it BUT you'll have to 'run as administrator.'
