Oregon automatic insurance after you buy a car?
I sold my old Volvo 940 to a freind of mine. She put it in her name right away, but she had it for a week and rearended another car. She did $900 worth of damage to the other car. But she had not insured the car yet. She does own another vehicle that was insured. I told her that she should have insured the vehicle, but that I thought that she should be covered for thirty days after buying the car since she already had insurace on another car. This is for the state of Oregon. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks.

my ins company here in iowa covers my "new to me" vehicles for 30 days at the policy with the best coverage.i have a couple policies with just liability.the beater pickup and kids car are just liablity the rest are full.so my new purchase would be under the best policies .

Your friend's insurance policy will clearly state what it covers. If you both read it the question will be answered.

I'm using AmFam too (sorry, SRJ!). Even when I had only liability-only policies, a new purchase had full coverage immediately, as long as I paid the premium for it within 30 days.

She is probably covered by her own carrier as the Volvo likely fit under her new policy as "a newly acquired automobile" on the DOL and was automatically covered.
I HOPE. You DID file a "release of liability" with the Oregon DMV, the day you sold the car, to protect yourself from liability, in a case like this the day you sold it. DIDN'T you ![]() ![]()

The state doesn't require proof of insurance for either a temporary registration or full registration? That is a new one to me...

That depends on the state. IL does not. Instead, they mail out a card every now and then which asks for your policy number for some date in the recent past, and you'd best fill it out and return it.
