i think - based on the fact that he was in the army and was hospitalized for "mental fatigue" - that he had some ptsd issues, which he obviously tried to overcome by delving into art, and later, religion. and i think he was hounded by a lot of morons, who invaded his privacy, and mistook him for a fictional character he created.

his later work is discussed on the ny times op-ed page today ( 1-30-10) and is worth reading. (the work and the editorial )
