What' the best antivirus software out there?
Hey Everyone,
My wife and I recently bought a new laptop computer. It comes with antivirus software preloaded on it, but I was wondering if anyone recommends any particular software over another. We've been running Norton 360 for the last couple years and have been pretty happy with that, but I was just wondering if there's anything else out there that I should look at before I take the plunge again with Norton. Thanks, and yes I'll try posting a little more often.... :) |
If you're using Norton 360 then you've just never come across a virus/malware yet.
Pretty much the only thing worth paying for to have on your computer is MalwareBytes. Don't waste your money on the resource-hogging/doesn't find anything norton. |
Pawo obviously hasn't tried the latest iterations of Norton. I tried a trial and was very impressed. Still, I wouldn't pay much for it considering there are good free ones out there. Personally I use microsoft's own free suite and am happy with it.

Vipre is good for an "antivirus" solution.....or AVG. Norton should be called "slow your PC down edition" |
I have been running Windows Security Essentials, and have been fairly happy with it.
Looks and seems to be fairly low overhead, so I have been keeping it around. |
Ditto on the Norton Thumbs down,
Vipre was spotty, a few machines great, a few it caused problems. Never really investgated once removed the problems went away. I like Trend if you are going to pay for it. MalwareBytes is a good free, AVG is another good free one. I don't like it, but if you have ComCr*p they give you a free Symantec, I have friends that are using it w/o issue |

I've just purchased Norton 360. My computer totally sucks now. Firefox keeps going into not responding mode.

Try AVAST! it is free.
also install superantispyware and malwarebytes' anti mal ware its all free. also use Fire fox browser. That browser does a good job for me of keeping junk out like excessive cache and cookies. MS explorer lets all the junk in. |
Avast is junk, it hardly finds anything of the modern malware....not even worth installing/running it. Same for spybot.
|
yeah but avast is an anti virus not anti malware software. That's why I personally use other antimalware softwares as a cocktail.
AVAST has done me good so far.... but its all an individual experience...:) |

Best ?
Just got a new harddrive, Seagate crashed last week .
Ended up buying the Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 and installed it. Had McAfee and hated it, besides it did not catch the ' Windows 32 crap. Not a computer guru, so any info/and or advice is appreciated. |
If you are running Windows Vista/7, just use AVG free along with the windows firewall (unless you have an alternate firewall).
Another key component often overlooked is to ensure you update Windows frequently. Vista and 7 also provide malicious software removal tools as part of the Windows Update process. If you set Windows Update to automatic, it will check daily for you and update when possible. This is critical to prevent a lot of the newest forms of nasty viruses from infecting your PC. Browser security is as big a part of the chain as an antivirus program. Some exploits can get in through IE before the antivirus can act so it is important to keep it patched. Microsft releases quite a few periodic security updates for both the OS and IE. A goood example of recent bugs are the fake antivirus malware exploits that a few people here have posted about. Antivirus Live or Antivirus 2009 are good examples. The consumer edition of Norton is terrible, I would never install it. It is resource-intensive and is one of the most pervasive software packages out there. Once installed, it is almost impossible to fully remove, even with manual registry editing. It should almost qualify as a virus itself! |
Powerpig turned me on to AVG a year or so ago and it has worked very well for me. Plus, it's free for individual users.
www.avg.com |
I like Microsoft's Security Essentials. It's got pretty low overhead and is very unobtrusive (both pluses for me).
It's free, just have to validate your Windows install during the install process (I have it working fine on XP x32 SP3, W7 x64 and Vista x64) |
I use Malwarebytes and Symantec both are very good.

No antivirus is the best.
Use a firewall, browse the internet with firefox, and install adblock plus. You will rarely run into a problem. Oh and keep your version of Java SE and flash up to date. Same goes for your entire windows install. Push come to shove, however I would recommend AVG and Malware Bytes. Antivirus companies are always going to be one step behind. It's pointless to actually pay a subscription fee. |
I used AVG for years until recently, when I switched to Avast. The newest build (free) has their best engine in it, and works extremely well on my Vista and XP machines. It is very light, and always on, unlike the previous versions of AVG which would only scan after the fact. Avast has caught a number of things on their way in, and prevented the task of removal.
Malwarebytes is hands down the best malware remover, and used in conjunction with Avast, will provide you with very good protection at no cost. |
