Name that car

Last night I watched "Back to the Future" with my wife and daughter for the umpteenth time. It snowed 21 inches and the power was out so we watched it on my daughters laptop in front of the fireplace. I can't believe I never noticed this before, but Doc Brown had this gorgeous yellow convertible. I know I should recognize the hood ornament. It is a flying winged something. Can anyone name that car make and model?

Yep, that's the one. Thanks! What a beautiful car. Some cars come across really well in yellow. Some don't do yellow well at all. Too bad Packard isn't around any more.

If I ever have the $$ to acquire a real old car like that, a packard is high on my list. They are pretty sweet. A straight 8 would be awesome.

STraight eights are very smooth and have a distinct sound. I had a 52 pontiac back in the seventies and graduated to early fifties caddies.

Packard straight eights rule!
I saw a demonstration by an owner at the AACA Fall meet at Hershey, PA 20, or 30 years ago. The owner balanced a nickel on edge on the running engine. He balanced it with the engine "off", but the starter motor torque knocked it over. He then balnaced it the running engine. He said, a really good Packard will let you balance a dime on edge.

Those vintage of Packards (as were most) were not advanced, but REFINED.

The Packard Super 8 used nine main bearings the regular 8 did not. 1942 might have been the last of the "Super" 8.

Here is a 1938 Packard V12 at the Auburn Cord Duesenburg Automobile Museum in Auburn, IN. The curator is a friend of mine. And although he gets to drive around in Duesenburgs J's this car is his favorite at the museum. He has had the opportunity to drive this car on some trips to other museums. He had told me the worst thing about driving this car is that you arrive and the ride is over.
The curator's dream with this car is to take it for and around the world trip because he claims that the car can do it.

I borrowed a copy of "Standard Catalog of American Cars 1865 (or so) to 1942 from the local public library. It lists EVERY car to have been produced, or even filed paperwork to produce in American up to WW2. ( It was difficult to return to the library, as it is out of print, and rare and $$$. The fine for a "lost" book is a mere pittance. But I dogress.)

Anyway, in studying that book, to my eye, the 1936 to 1939 era of American cars produced just about the best looking cars of all time. I do not think there was a real "dog" made in that era. Sure, Hup, and others had some quirky grilles/ front end, but as a whole, it was the BEST era in American car design.

If I had to pick a 3 year period I believe I would choose 32 33 34. Though I do not disagree with you about the fine looking Autos 36-39. As far as Hupp I really like the 1934-35 Aerodynamic. The Head of Hupp was a kook. If you get a chance read up on him.

That is a nice looking automobile. The horns look really vulnerable though. I'll bet a lot of them got broken off.

"kook" is such a strong word, how about "eccentric"?
