Mac Help/Advice

I never updated my G4 iBook to Leopard, and now I am regreating it. Where do I find a copy of it? Apple stopped selling it in August.

MTI 02-14-2010 12:19 AM

It's widely available on eBay and Craigslist. The discs are DVD.

I want to do the same thing...problem is...my built in slot-load DVD drive just stopped working. :(

Should be able to down load snow leopard.

Sounds like we have two people here who should have bought a PC. And now is an opportune time! :D

And FYI, the G4 is ultra-slow. Apple's min recommended specs for it are a G5 or the Intel Core2 Duo.

A G4 laptop's not particularly slow, depending on what you're doing with it. Trying to process video? yeah. Mine runs Photoshop just fine and copies videos well, but not as fast as my intel Macs. Snow Leopard will not run on a G4. Check CL, or put a wanted ad there. Ebay is good for that stuff too.

I was seeing a few for $200 or more, then I was seeing some for a lot less, but have been used. How does it work with licensing when buying one that has been used?

My new computer plan is just to keep my iBook going for as long as possible, which means upgrading to Leopard, and get an android based phone that I should be able to use for most things I need to do. I might even hold out a little longer for the Nexus One to come to Verizon!

I'm not saying that it's "zippy" but Leopard runs just fine on a G4 system, whether it's a Powerbook, iBook, iMac or Mac Mini in their G4 flavors. The real key is to have enough ram. A faster HD helps too, but ram is the biggest improvement.

*2 on that. Plan to have at least 2gb of ram.

I run 4gb in my Macbook Pro with 10.5. I now have 10.6 and it runs very well.

A G4 should do OK with 10.5 with 2GB ram, one of my kids is still using my old G4 PowerBook with 10.4; it's quick enough for most stuff.

Speed doesn't matter to me, as for I am wanting it, so I can use some programs that won't work with Tiger.

elchivito 02-14-2010 11:14 PM

Regarding buying a used set, or for that matter a *cough* copy: Mac OS doesn't phone home in the same way Win-Doze does. You're in the clear. The install disks are often model specific however. Be careful you don't buy an install disk for a desktop instead of a laptop. It might not install unless it's a full Apple set of generic install disks. If you know anyone who has a similar laptop to yours, you could possibly borrow the system disks and install it that way.

The Fiance has a MacBook Pro, but doesn't know where any of her disks are.
