Sail training Barkentine sinks of coast of Brazil
Anyone else read the stories about this? Sail training vessel filled with Canadian high school and college students sank in a storm off the coast of Brazil. All were rescued after about 40 hours in liferafts.

That's real training they got. I'm glad they're all safe. Too bad about such a beautiful ship.

I wonder what happend?
I was reading an interesting book where the author analyzed several modern sailing ship accidents and sinkings. The author found a lot of the sinkings are attributed to several factors, one of the main ones being modifications done to the sail plan over time. A lot of these ships are carrying more canvas than they were designed to, or have different rigs than they were launched with, or have had major modifcations that raised the center of gravity. Connected to heavy seas or a microbursts this has caused problems. A few years back the Eagle was thrown on her side in a microburst that caught the coasties by surprise.

From what I raid in today's paper, a microburst blew it down and it never recovered, turning upside down.

Thats what I suspected, they were probably carrying to much sail and either had hatchs open or maybe the superstructure was modified and she was carrying to much weight up top. They were luckly everyone got out, those kind of sinkings happen very, very fast.
This was the book:
