The Forum's "Legend Cars"
I had mentioned at some point, I think when Tyler was selling his prized 300D that the "legend cars" were being sold off.
Now, what makes a car on the forum a "Legend Car"? Well when I first joined the forum I remember hearing about Hatty's SDL with the uber rare interior and I decided that I was going to buy it eventually. I did, then sold it. Tyler's petrol green 300D was also very nice with a great story. Karug's and his super clean cars are also in the legend group Hatty's SDL too because it was a talked about car. Coda, now Chad's SDL was talked about as well. 280SE.Guy's car is clearly a very clean car and belongs on my list of legend cars. I'd say any car on this forum with a really good story belongs in the "Legend Car" group. My E320 Cabriolet has a great story and should probably belong as well.. |

You see that in a lot of forums that cater to a niche like this. I know on the Subaru sites, the screen names change but the cars remain the same. Want a service history? Just look up the s/n of the guy you bought it from. Better than carfax too, since non-reported stuff gets boasted/mourned.

How about Wilma, there can't be that many '70 250CE's in the states, especially with a radio delete. I'm nowhere near the level that 280SEguy's car is though Wilma's story is pretty neat though. I randomly came across the ad in "Old Car Trader" --before autotrader bought them out-- and bought her sight unseen same day from 2000 miles away, thus saving her from "Cash for Clunkers." I bought 2 of my MBs from other members.
Coda from daw_two and Red Dragon from Riethoven. My wagon is also a legend car in "my" mind due to the 9 months of time I spent rust crusading and getting it ready to be a daily driver. It's back seat is immortalized in the Peachparts DIY Articles.

Black and beautiful. As I recall it moved across country.

I also remember Johns silver SDL, that was about 10 years ago now. He had an SDL when no one had SDL's on this forum, and reading his posts made me want one. It was sold to Plantman in FL and I'm not sure where it is now. That was a nice car. Heck when I started surfing this forum people were buying E300D's off lease. I remember some guys paying big bucks for them because you couldn't get new diesels in this country at the time, the CDI was a pipe dream.

I always thought my SL was more of a legend car, but I won't drive it to both coasts for all the forum to see like Ol' Turbo. Its just not practical for that.
How many people have gotten the first car they ever fell in love with, the first car they ever drove (accidentally at 4 with bad results), a car brought back from the brink, and originally owned by their grandmother? The vin plate on the door says "imported by Paul Hoover", my father who filled out the order form for grandmother. My grandmother drove it daily for 15 years until my grandfather died in 2000. After that, she started driving the Cadillac full time, the SL rarely moving until I got ahold of it in 2002. When I got it, it was smoking from the exhaust and under the hood, the paint was yellowing, tires flat spotted, rust developing on the fenders and rockers. It has been a long and very expensive journey to get it where it is. Also, how about Colin's Norm? A barn find cheap wagon that made it from California to Florida and back.

I was reminiscing at work today, and realized I started my trip one year ago on the 1st. I honestly can't believe it's been a year already. |

Clearly, I'm pretty new to this scene, but, nevertheless, I've done a lot of searches and read a lot of posts and I'd have to say bodhi's 124 and craig's 123 would have to rank pretty high on the list.
Oh, and Joseph_Conrad's light ivory 300D, now there's a car I'll really remember. Sweet ride.

I don't care how much reliability, economy, and time my '83 300SD and I had together - at 305K miles, and 8.5 years of ownership - it was time to part company and buy a new Benz for me. Same thing with my '99 E300TD - when it's time to move it - I'll know it, and it will then become only a faint memory, after replacing it. I was sucked-in to the whole Mercedes-Benz deal by my Father's example of driving an MB diesel over-the-road on business. It simply made sense to buy a diesel-powered MB car to save a boat load of money on fuel, and to run it hundreds of thousands of miles over-the-road on business travel usage - in order to earn hundreds of thousands of dollars over the term of owning said MB diesel. Being fond of machines, it's hard not to develop a fondness for MBs. But my fondness stops a tad after their economy of scales and practicality. The gold-plated legend these cars represent, is in their practicality - that's it. Last edited by Skid Row Joe; 03-03-2010 at 02:36 AM. |

Of all the 123s I've seen, gerkebi's 240D is the finest. It belongs in a museum.
That's 4640 miles.
