Today I took apart a Carrera GT..

That thing's a freaking parts goldmine! Sad to see it it such a state. :(

Are you guys repairing that or just tering it down to see what makes it tick? That looks totaled.

Salvage for parts, the monocoque is intact but it's a total. It'll probly mostly go to Europe if I had to guess.

Carbon fiber and aluminum. You figure it would disintegrate in an accident . The cabin seems to have fared pretty well.

I never seen the inside of one amazing suspension and love the pedals. All OEM I guess ?

Naturally the cabin area is a cell of security for the occupants and the rest is designed to disintegrate and crumple and absorb the impact.

Looking at how it it constructed I would wager that even at a half mil or so each Porsche probably did not make money on them.

I'm pretty sure Porsche lost money on them. They were originally supposed to be an endurance racer, but plans for that were scrapped and they turned it into a production car. The 10cyl was an added bonus. You could probably drop it out of a C130 and survive the crash. You do have a parts goldmine on your hands there Wolf. Any chance I could have the Porsche crest off of it? Maybe even the Carerra GT lettering? It would make cool Wall art for me.

The crest I'm pretty sure is standard late model, there are more than a few 986/996 parts in it, but mostly small stuff. Every single part of the thing is ridiculously expensive.

No doubt with the construction they lost money on them, that level of CF work is extremely expensive.

It really is pretty neat the way it's made. There is a CF cage that houses the drivetrain and such that bolts onto the cockpit just behind the seats, you can see the parting line in one photo. The front has a similar setup with I believe some aluminum in those two frame horns, but they are still mostly CF. The suspension took most of the impact and deformed as it should, the wheels even survived, they are magnesium I think.

Everything on the car weighs next to nothing. I think one person could pick up any one part excluding the engine/trans, which themselves are quite light. The seats you can pick up both with fingertips. I'm actually not a Porsche nut despite being surrounded by them, but it's a very interesting car to have a chance to poke at and take apart.
I think I'm sort of automotively jaded these days.

Same basic design but a lot of variance over the years in the Porsche crest. Some specific one's off real early 911's will bring a few hundred bucks if they are in good condition. They usually aren't. The newer cars are VW's, just without the reliability, by and large.

As is often the case with high end cars that aren't overly consumer-oriented, they say it's not an easy car to drive. It was about a $400K mistake though.

Gotta love that cooling system.
IIRC, those wheels have hollow spokes. They saved weight absolutely everywhere they could on these cars.

No its not, Jay Leno lost one on a track to. Didn't damage the car though, he got lucky and just ended up in the grass.

They are probably one of the best sports cars ever made. Take a look at the clutch its a work of art.

You could probably sell the scrap accident damaged parts on ebay for a few bucks. A lot of people would probably love to own a part of a GT.
