Craiglist bogus replies

I put my 79 SD on Craigslist on Saturday. I've gotten 3 bogus replies, each of which asks me to click on a link embedded in the reply. Obviously, I haven't clicked, but I'm curious as to whether anyone knows what kind of scam is taking place with these kind of replies?

Most are just phishing for e-mail addresses, but quite a few are looking for gullible sellers who let their guard down.

They are very unlikely to be the Nigerian wire transfer and more of a way to expose yourself to spam and attack sites.

I listed some surplus equipment from work, and I got a LOT of responses offering to help me find a new job, or to loan me money.
I did not respond.

I got a disgusting amount of solicitations while trying to sell my father's $60,000 Year One Trans-Am. All wanted to "help me" sell it by doing the exact same thing I was doing. Since I knew the car better than them and know how to take a picture I probably marketed it better than they ever could.

Only 2 rounds on ebay and it was gone.

With every other car I list on craigslist I usually get one or two for some random company trying to do the same thing. Since I put my phone number on there I even get robo or telemarketing calls sometimes. Once I took the time to ask exactly what $100 gets me other than platitudes and a cars.com listing I could do myself. Nothing. They guarunteed to have multiple buyers for my Wagoneer waiting, and I asked how many. They couldn't give me an exact number. The telemarketer didn't even know who made the Grand Wagoneer.

On the inferior imported steel issue, you don't give an opinion as to whether or not your car is in the category of "many 1979 116 models rusted into oblivion as a result of a steel strike in Germany in 1979 . . . "

I mean I guess honesty is a good thing but that almost sounds like TMI.

FWIW.

You are likely receiving responses from companies that 'Have Willing Buyers' or would like it if you would 'Let Us Help You Sell Your Car!'

I listed my 240D on Friday morning and I've gotten three replies so far. Two were bogus. One was a lowballer, but I told him if I still have the car in a week I'll take his offer.

When I listed my 95 chevy wagon I got at least five bogus responses the first day. I am not sure if I got any real responses. Do you count ridiculously low offers real? I may have gotten a couple of those.

Don't use the CL forwarding system. Check the "Don't display contact info" option, and then a the bottom of the post put this:
Thanks to CL's refusal to do anything about the spam responses, please e-mail me direct at -myemailaddress at mydomain dot com-
I've been having to do that for a while, every now and then i post in a hurry and forget to undo the anonymous reply, and get tons of spam.
If you want to keep their forwarding, then forward all your spam e-mails to:
Spam@craigslist.org, spam@uce.gov, and spam, abuse, report_spam or whatever other address their e-mail provider requests.

my email address at my domain dot com....

So in my case that would be twalgamuth@comcast.net@mydomain.com?

Does this require joining something at my domain dot com?

Tom,

I think what he's trying to express is that he puts his e-mail address directly in his Craiglist ad, but formats it in a way that he hopes will prevent it from being automatically "harvested" by spammers. That's why he's spelling out "at" and "dot".

I got another one today:

Quote:
you have Howdy,

I visited your post for your vehicle '77 Mercedes 240D and im interested in buying it. I've been looking for ages. My husband is away for the next few days, and I dont want to miss out on it while he is away, its 100 percent what I have been searching for, and the cost is right.

I hope its still available!! I have the asking cost but I cannot seem to find an autoquote for this specific model. Could you try with your details on the following website and email me back if it works. I'm sure im having a ditz moment, but its the last thing before I can arrange to pick it up and purchase it. It has to be with this company becuase we get a saving becuase my partner already uses them. Thanks so much for helping a lady out! I Actually live in Reno too so there should be no problem picking the vehicle up.

Oh the site I use is: Go Here

talk to you soon - George

CJ wius
Hmmm. A lady named George? Interesting English phrasing for someone from Reno. Wanting to know insurance rates on a parts car? And of course the ever present "I hope it's still available".
