"quality" OEM parts

well I had the front main seal replaced on my m104 engine... and its leaking out the $60 worth of damn synthetic oil I had to put in the car since thats what the damn car requires. I just had that damn job done and its leaking.. again!

I used the OEM seal bought from Mercedes Benz and had it installed by my trusted independent. He told me that since its an OEM part sold by Mercedes that they have a warranty on it and have to honor it by replacing it free of charge until its correct.

So I guess that means I have to take my car, my invoices, and myself to a dealership and tell them whats up.

I swear this is annoying. After this damn leak is fixed I am getting rid of the car.. thats it.. I do not have the time nor the patience for this stupid thing.. I'm going to buy a honda (since I cant trust toyota)

I highly doubt they honor the work done. Just the seal.

Did your mechanic take a look to see if there was a groove worn on the surface that the seal rides against?

When I replaced the front main seal on my m117 engine in the SEC, I found a groove where the seal's lip rode on the harmonic balancer hub.
The local Napa Auto parts shop had a repair sleeve, which was just a thin bronze sleeve that you press over the bearing surface after putting some sealant down under it, and smeared inside it.

If I remember correctly, it was a $10 fix, and I haven't had any front main seal issues since.

there was a very very small grove where the seal would ride and it had carbon deposits in it. or something

Pure and simple old Diesels in my opinion. Might as well use them well they're still useable. There'll come a day when all we'll have to pick from are the hondas and toyotas as far as an affordable used car.

For now, a w123 or w124 is a much better car to have in my opinion. And you know how to fix them... at least this... nothing is a surprise for the most part.

Of course a seal can go bad on any MB.

So far I've been fairly impressed with the OEM MB parts. But as with anything (especially now that more is being exported), quality can get iffy. It's hard to tell sometimes. That's what makes forums so great.
People that market/manufacture crappy parts won't get away with it. The word gets out quick. Blue label M104 coils are something I learned about right away. One good example of a crappy OEM part.

It seems, like *YOUR* mechanic should be warrenteeing the labor here. How long did it last- the failure is probably incorrect installation or the inner bearing surface of the balancer is damaged.
MB will honnor parts and labor on some parts. But for the seal, you'd only get a free part *IF* it was installed correctly.

X2.......I don't think a dealer would honor another shops work. The shop should do it again and keep doing it till it's right.

BTW my Camry used platinum spark plugs.

Synthetic oil will find a place to leak. And I've found that the zimmerman and meyle, FAG, etc, parts are usually nicer than anything that has an MB sticker. Even better, to get an industrial seal used in heavy equipment.

I'll trade you my minty little Mazda Miata, and maybe put a little cash on top of it. Its a fun, stupidly simple, great performing, reliable little guy. Ebay the wheels on it right now and get some smaller lighter ones and you've got an autocross ready weekend racer. Julie likes the wheels which is why I kept them. She's driving it currently.

I named it Mr. Miyagi. I didn't know at the time what I was buying, but previous owner had to be a big enthusiast. New paint (M edition style dark blue Mica) new uppholstery, newer style top with rear glass, expensive rose wood wheel (I bought the matching shifter and e-brake handle), Alpine head unit with great speakers, and it looks to have had the timing belt and water pump recently. All the hoses look fresh as well as the coolant. Its a non-interference engine so there's nothing to really worry about unless you overheat it.

The top goes up or down in less than 5 seconds manually. 2 clips and push.

You also might want to move the "cold air" intake away from the exhaust manifold, or get a stock airbox and ebay that one for some $$$.

Take Tyler up on that deal, Miatas are the most fun you can have for the money... and they're pretty reliable. If you do get a Honda get something fun like an Integra.
