Grant and Lincoln believed in the basic trustworthiness of men as demonstrated by the generous terms offered by Grant in his surrender terms.
Others that followed them in the administration of the peace upon the south were not so generous. Lots that happened after Lincoln's death was very very bad. The scars of it remain today.

Reconstruction and the Union millitary occupation of the south lasted many years after Appomatox.
They made great strides until the Supreme Court deemed the civil rights act of 1875 unconstitutional. It would take 75 more years for those rights to be won again. Danny

Thanks for posting that reminder of this historic event.
In many respects the world has changed for the worse since those days. |

Lincoln made war and in the end, war found him. when the initial secessions began, the South sent an envoy to Washington to meet with Lincoln in an attempt to negotiate peace. LINCOLN REFUSED TO MEET WITH THE SOUTHERN PEACE NEGOTIATORS!!
to me, that's a clear sign he wanted to make war. reminds me of a court case I was involved with a long time ago. prior to trial, I attempted to settle with the opposition's lawyer. he refused to negotiate and said to me and the co-defendant: LET'S GET IT ON BOYS!!! |

The south had so many things going against it that it was a long shot if they were ever going to win.
For starters their idea of state's rights only hindered their ability to wage war effectively with all of them bickering on how many people to send. On top of that they really were economically weaker than the North. It is sad to think that the Civil War really was one of the most violent wars in the history of this country with so many people dieing. It's amazing how quickly we forget.

Some people in the south still think think the war of northern aggression isn't over.

of Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina. you will know they are true southerners by the 50 feet tall flag pole in the front yard flying the stars and bars. easy to spot. |
