Auto Transport

What are you experiences? What should one look out for in choosing an auto transporter?

The more and more I look at it, it seems like it will be cheaper to ship a car from the South/Cali here to New Jersey than it would be to fly out and drive it back. So I am exploring options. =)

From what I have read apparently going via train is almost not an option, one site I read says that it only goes from Florida up and down the coast and you have to train with your vehicle (odd).

Anyway feel free to share your experiences!

Frank,

I used Mills Transport - located in Dubuque, Iowa (Google them) 3 years ago to bring an antique motorcycle from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Texas, they were 33% less than the name-brands, with a zero-deductible on any damage done to the vehicle. I had to allow them one month lead time to gather other vehicles to deliver across the country. The charge Ken Mills quoted was $550.00 payable COD or credit card on delivery. The driver was out of Goodyear, AZ. He was delivering several exotic cars and two other antique motorcycles from the east to the west coast.

The above company transported a 560 SEL from Laguna Beach CA. to Ohio. The transporter truck and trailer was first class. So was the driver. On board the transporter were 3 high end Mercedes and other expensive cars. I was impressed with entire operation. The truck was on the way to New Jersey. The cost was about $1200.00 in 2006. They were recommended by Frank's Motor Cars. 900 South Coast Highway Laguna Beach, CA 92651 PH (949) 494 9420. You might call and ask if they still would recommend them again. Hope this helps.

I asked my local indy benz dealer, who ships cars all over the country, for a recommendation and ended up with a local shipper. The cost was about $1/mile.

Thanks for your info guys -- for some reason DAS was somewhere around $650 while everybody else I got quick quotes from was around $1000 or above (open trailer).

@Skid Row Joe -- I just requested a quote from your guys. =)

Take a look at USHIP dot Com. Been using them for about a year now with some great results and big $$ savings.

Take a close look at that DAS quote. I don't believe they offer insurance as default. I think when I read the fine print, they limited their liability to $500. So AFAIK, they could deliver a burnt out shell and say sorry, here's $500

@TX76513 - Thank you sir I sure will!

EDIT: Good lord this site asks you 5,000 questions! =)

@jubjub - but honestly if you ask their track record I imagine they've brought a burnt out shell and said sorry few times, if at all.

I used this site once, too, with excellent results. Just be sure your shipper is fully insured!

$650.00, sounds like an outstanding bid to me.

Ken Mills' wife at the home office of Mills Transport in Dubuque, Iowa will provide you with a written quote, as they did for me - if you go with them.
