Love that airline overbooking

The three of us were scheduled today on United: Charlotte--Chicago-Denver arriving 940pm Flight out of Charlotte overbooked. We are asked, 'Are we willing to switch to a direct US Air Flight Charlotte--Denver arriving 8pm in exchange for 3 free round trip tickets? Hmmm? Should we take the deal?

Yep, rhetorical. Almost as good as the day I was overbooked on three successive flights out of New Orleans, yielding 3 roundtrip tickets for a few hours of hanging around the airport.

Northwest used to give free round trip tickets for being bumped, but since they're now Delta, it's only a $300 credit which in most cases (at least where I go) isn't a round trip ticket.

I met at a guy who flew out of Kansas City every week on Friday to go home, and that flight was oversold every single week. He ended up getting a free round trip ticket nearly every week and departing in the evening.

He had more round trip tickets that he could use in a lifetime.

This is why flying sucks; when you need to be someplace, you need to be there as scheduled. Now I avoid flying whenever possible. I used to fly a lot and ended up with more miles and upgrade coupons than I could ever use. I eventually just used up the miles for business travel. It's probably gotten worse. Fortunately I only fly a few times per year now so I don't have to deal with this nonsense.

Nonsense is absolutely the word. At Atlanta, my bag with some talcum powder cannot make it through............they have to test it for explosives every time..............and, of course, a tube of toothpaste might also be an explosive...........so, it stays in Atlanta, as well.

So, you won't drive to Peru.................

Luckly, I'm able to work within driving distance and my schedule allows me not to fly very much. Even my kids hate to fly now.

Brian,
Down here a couple of weeks ago our State Police Commissioner flew out for a meeting with the clip from his hand gun (with 3 rounds on it) in his pocket, the gun was in his checked luggage, no questions asked. When he tried to get on a plane for his return journey, it was a case of "no way".
It ended up he was given an official written warning. The guy that let him on the original flight was stood down & has to under go retraining before he can go back to work.
If the most senior police cant take guns and ammo on a plane, who is looking after us?
Try taking a granite chess set on some time, the pieces look like bullets, gets them real excited!!!
A student prank from a few years ago was to place foil cut outs of a hand gun in several of the paperback novels at one of the airport shops, when some unsuspecting traveler buys it & tries to get through, they get real excited thinking its a concealed weapon in the book.

A few years ago someone did the "handgun cutout" trick to a co-worker at a nuclear power plant I was working at, the security folks weren't amused.

They don't seem to get very excited. They just take the bag and rifle it for the next 15 minutes and do their programmed routine and no amount of explanations will deter them from their programmed task. Arguing is futile............just causes them to slow down the process.

And, when they're done, the moron must take the bag and put it back through the machine again............just to cover the remote possibility that they find something new that wasn't in the bag the first time.

Total and complete idiots............

There's lots to complain about with the airlines but I'm not complaining tonight. Home, getting ready for bed prior to the time I was initially scheduled to land with three vouchers in hand to get us to some warm weather for Xmas.
