Angry Identity theft..... Federal agencies at work...

Need to vent....

Our 4 year old son got his identity stolen...

Well, spent the last 24 hrs talking to Credit bureaus, Police department, IRS, SS office and the Federal Trade Commission.... Aside from the very helpful people at the credit bureaus and police department. It's just amazing how useless and inefficient all of these departments are when you need something.....

Took a total of 3:23 minutes (Fed agencies only) of hold time on the phone..... And I am going absolutely NOWHERE....

I just had a glimpse of how well our National Healcare system is going to work......

Hold on tight folks, and hope that you NEVER, EVER get sick or need to get some meaningful help....

I'll probably feel better tomorrow, I think that, being TAX time makes it even worst to see how well my money is spent...

How did you find out that your 4-year old had his identity stolen? Bills in his name mailed to you?

Just curious....and being proactive should the same happen to my teen...

Since national healthcare has been signed into law as a "right," expect more red-tape, lines, and delays getting anything done.

I'd recommend anyone with any health concerns to have them addressed fairly soon, before the system gets completely choked because of the new law.

Our electronic tax return filing was rejected by the IRS, someone was using his SSN on their return....

It could have been an honest mistake from the other party, but unfortunately it is not...

If this ever happens to you:

1)- Call your local police , file report, they'll give you a case#
2)- Call the Fed Trade Commission 1-877 438-4338. They'll give you a Ref#
3)- Call the SS Office: (800) 772-1213 Total waste of time but you have to do it.
4)- Call the IRS, they'll tell you to go to your local office.
5)- Contact all of the Credit report agencies and notify them.

Just came back from my local IRS office, the agent was very clear, "we are not a law enforcement agency", and "what would you like us to do?".... UNREAL...Would not even look at all the supporting documents we had with us to prove our son's identity...

Spent 2 hours there.....

It's going to take me the rest of the day to calm down........

Should go for a ride in my MB.

Fred,

Hate to hear this - but it gives us all a heads-up on what can happen to any of us.

Take care now - as best you can.

There is a form.. Cant' remember the designation to revoke a SSN. Might ask about that. Only the higher up's in the IRS will know about that...
And the whole "We're not a law enforcement agency" thing is bull****. just try not paying your taxes and then hear about how they actually are a law enforcement agency...

Well,

Decided to go for some therapy this afternoon.

Took the time off and installed the windshield on my 300TD project, this afternoon.

Well your son is lucky in many respects. He isn't 18 so no one can take out a line of credit in his name, but at the same time a complete annoyance nonetheless.

Maybe it is a administrative error?

A few years ago my youngest brother (35yo) started getting all sorts of bills sent to him. It turns out that there is another person about 1000 miles away with exactly the same name & born on the same day as him. A complete PITA. The other person had skipped off without paying some large bills so people went looking for him. There was even a court order on him. It took a while to sort the mess out. Even our stupid health system ( what you good people will soon have) got in on the mix up. Try proving that you are not some one else & they are not you.

You have now done everything that can be done. The only other thing would be to get a Life-Lock account for your son. Since only identity thieves would be using it for the time being, those guys will track any identity thieves because they are hooked into insurance companies who have to pay oif something goes wrong.

Imagine an insurance company knowing it's either got to catch a guy or pay your son's bills? What do you think those heartless ba$tards will do to nab the thief?

Just about anything that won't cost them money...including a long walk off a short pier if they can get away with it.

Swiss banks had a problem with hackers like that in 1998. One bank hired retired GSG9 (German anti-terrorist agents) to find them. When they found them, they were told " Just make sure they know not to do it any more. We don't need to know the details."

Imagine being the thief who stole from the Swiss and got caught by those Germans.....
