Sad and heroic. If the Capt. hadn't taken the time to call in the coordinates, which appears to have been too much time, the Coasties might not have found the rest of the crew in time. I wonder if the EPIRB was functioning?

Speaking of which. The first episode had a cod fishing boat that took on water and capsized. All 4 crew members were rescued. It's a dangerous business up there. Freezing or near freezing waters, storms that are just wicked.
I cannot imagine what it takes to become a Cost Guard up there. I am willing to bet they have titanium balls or boobs (for the female Coasties).

Everyone who works those waters has brass balls. Those guys were near death after 3 hours, if they hadn't been called in chances are all of them would have died. Their Captain was a very brave man. Although I wonder what happend to the EPIRB?

A lot of things can happen, sounds like they went down fast so it may have gotten damaged. Or the epirb could have popped free only to get sucked down with the vessel.
Life rafts are really the last place you want to be, they are miserable and not very reliable or safe. Maybe it wasn't taken care of or was damaged. The old saying goes you only leave your boat when you have to step up into the life raft.

That's what happened in a vessel sinking off the coast here last year and contributed to the delay in launching CG SAR. The investigation has been ongoing for a year now. http://www.app.com/article/20100413/NEWS/100410049/N.J.-fishing-boat-sinking-prompts-call-for-GPS-rescue-beacon-rule Six crew lost. One survivor. Here's where they go. http://videos.nj.com/star-ledger/2009/05/underwater_footage_of_fishing.html |
