Gimme your best computer adware/spyware cleaner

What's the latest-greatest freeware for cleaning up the computer?
I just uninstalled Spybot S&D, after trying it out again last week. I think it really does catch a lot of things, but computer was just soooo slowwww...
I use Superantispyware and a registry cleaner by Eusing.
After removing Spybot I seem to be running much faster immediately.

Avira

http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php

(I run the Avira
[Along with Spybot S+D , Ad Aware , Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and C Cleaner])

Oh ! And I've removed ALL of Internet Explorer...Every last stinking Byte.

"Chrome,Firefox,Linux"

My solution to slower speeds is to add memory...next step up on the board is
to 2 Mb.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc875811.aspx (Windows XP Firewall).

And run firefox with adblock plus. Make sure Adobe Flash and Java are updated regularly!

The last one is the most important. Flash and Java's web plugins are known vectors for attack.

Hoping to find freeware, Malware and apparently AVG aren't free.
Sorry, I'm cheap!

Malwarebytes is free, unless you want active protection (which is dumb, if you need that then you need to stop visiting porn sites!)

Malwarebytes is essentially the best, with AVG in second along with Vipre antivirus.

Spybot is bloated and worthless.

Malwarebytes and AVG will keep you out of trouble, both have free versions.

Also critical is ensuring your OS (Windows) is kept fully up to date with Windows Update. Ditto your virus definitions for AVG and MWB.

If Spybot was slowing your PC down...how old is your PC? Might be time for an upgrade.

Spybot will slow down anything, it is an awful program.

+1

The only problem I have had in years is a pesky re-direct. But, that was easily fixed.

There is no shortage of MAC rootkits and viruses out there, amazing there are this many considering so few people use them:

As I'm sure you know, there are currently no self replicating viruses for Mac OS X. If someone got a mac virus, they probably downloaded bootleg software and installed it themself after entering an admin password.

I was like that too until a few weeks ago when the ad server for a site I visited was hacked. It was able to get through Firefox and give me a fake antivirus program.

Isn't that the definition of a computer virus? That it has to be self replicating.

OP you could look at Microsoft Security Essentials. Not the greatest out there, but it's free, does real time scanning, and is the least naggy one out there. I've stopped recommending AVG because of all the 'We have a new version out, you must upgrade' popups
