Wink Car Hangs From 6th Floor Tulsa Parking Garage

TULSA, OK -- Tulsa fire crews responded to the scene of an accident at the Bank of America downtown parking garage Wednesday afternoon, after a luxury car broke through an outside wall on the 6th floor and was hanging over the edge.

The incident happened at about 2 p.m.
The driver of the Mercedes told police he somehow got his foot stuck under the gas pedal. He says that caused the car to zoom across the parking garage in reverse and slam into the outer wall.
Fire officials say there were no injuries in the accident. Emergency crews blocked off the area while they worked to pull the car out of the hole in the wall.
Several vehicles parked in a parking lot below the accident scene suffered damage as falling debris slammed to the ground.
The accident drew a large crowd of spectators as firefighters worked to get the car back inside the parking garage.
The parking garage is located at 6th and Boulder.

Never could one be so happy to have rear wheel drive!

Seriously? That bumper doesn't even look like it's been scratched. That really says something about the structure.

After the car stops, and the foot gets untangled from under the gas pedal (which makes absolutely NO sense how the driver had uncontrolled acceleration with a foot under the throttle), the first reaction wasn't to get it shifted into drive and pull out of that hole???

Gilly
if they got their foot stuck under the pedal in the first place, do you think they would have the common sense to try to drive out?

How do you get your foot stuck UNDER the gas pedal? Even if you do, is there a button UNDER the gas pedal that makes the car move? I checked my 99 and it doesn't seem to have that feature. Is that a new feature or an option?

Could the kickdown switch on the later models engage the throttle independently from the linkage-less pedal itself?

Yeah, that car looks like it survived unscathed, from the picture.

The photo I included here was taken from one of the Redditors. Then someone in the comments thread added the article...

I too find it funny that the back end is so in tact, that it made it through a brick wall, and that the driver didn't try and drive it back in. Not to mention the pedal story. =)

The new E-Class that I sat in did not have a kickdown switch. I guess they deleted it along with the normal gearshift

I don't believe even a Mercedes could go through a brick wall and look THAT good afterwards, certainly not a current model.

never really cared for parking garages for various reasons, this gives me another reason to stay away from them. take a cab or the bus and forget trying to park in most downtown areas. they charge out the wazoo and then you might get bricks raining down on your new car.

looks like the merc held up fairly well, though. guy was lucky he wasn't going faster, else he might have needed a parachute.

That wall must be VERY flimsy.
