Every Breath You Take

April 28, 2010 -- Major metropolitan areas in California still have some of the dirtiest air in the nation, despite a decade-long effort to reduce carbon emissions and other pollutants, finds a new report by the American Lung Association.

The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside area has the worst ozone levels, measures third dirtiest in terms of year-round particle pollution, and fourth worst in short-term pollution, the ALA says in its 2010 State of the Air report.

The State of the Air report, using data collected from 2006 to 2008, says overall nearly six in 10 Americans live in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution.

City Rankings for Worst Ozone Levels

Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside, Calif.
Bakersfield, Calif.

and isn't it interesting that California has some of the most stringent controls for emissions systems on cars. and yet, in some California cities, the air is the worst. lung disease in Los Angeles is double that of other areas of the United States. if you can't breathe, game over.

I suppose the argument would be that without those controls, it would be even worse.

It is the topography. The places listed are mostly in valleys or basins.

Interesting that Detroit isn't mentioned anywhere, but understandable: All the industry is gone and so are 900,000 people. That cuts yer pollution from everything except eating too many chili beans!

YES. The tighter the emissions controls, the worse the air gets. QED Let's all go back to the 60's era of pollution regs
