Aftermarket warranties...??

Has anyone purchased an aftermarket warranty for their vehicle? If so, what kind of coverage did you get and what was the cost?

I was going to inquire at US Fidelis but it seems they sold one too many policies on the 350SD.

I had the option of purchasing the remainder of the aftermarket warranty on a car I bought a few years ago. The policy covered everything that was not likely to break, and excluded everything that was, during the term of the policy

I had 2 experiences, both were third party policies bought from the dealer where I bought the car from.

The first was a success, I think because the dealer stayed in business for the term of the policy. All calls were directly to the dealer with no problems. I had an axle and trans issue fixed for the stated deductible.

The second, the dealer went out of business and was bought by an out of town dealer, then they shut down that local dealer (the other out of town dealer was still in business). My policy was still in effect. I had a carb to intake manifold gasket go out, and had it repaired by another dealer. I had to go through a call center in Texas and they wanted to see all my oil change records before authorizing the repair. I explained I did all the required manifold gasket maintenance.. 3 months later I finally beat them down enough to pay most of the bill. It was not easy.

Neither of these policies were from the auto manufacturer ( Ford and Isuzu). I think a CPO policy would probably be easier to get cooperation.

I've had two extended warranties. Both were on Ford Contours. Both were through or sold by the dealership, I bought the car from. The first one was an aftermarket. It was '96 and $1200 for 5 years up to 90K miles. The car had 18K on it at the time. The remainder of the factory warranty was up to 36K. I did have tranny problems on the car. A long story. It should have been convered by the factory. It was covered by the extended waaranty. The dealership messed it up worse. Some years latter, I had another dealership replace it. The extended warranty cover it.
The other one was around '03. The car had 18K on it. It might have had some of the factory warranty left. I paid $600 or so. It was a Ford extended warranty. It was for 5 years, possibly 75K miles. The manual tranny did have problems and they replaced it. They also covered a bad alternator. That went bad latter, within a year, and was replaced by that dealership.
So I got my money out of it or more, both times. The second one, I had to secure the work with a credit card. Then they would start the work. I don't remeber on the first one. I do remeber on the second one, they offered a higher cost one. I think a reported reliable after market one was $550 or so. They came back with the $660 one and I took that.
Now if your asking about the recent ones advertised on TV, I wouldn't know. I realy don't trust them.

When I bought the Volvo from an Infiniti dealer, I also bought the extended warranty offered by Nissan North America. I paid around $1,500 IIRC.

That warranty paid for new sway bar links, a new PS pump, and a new transmission (that alone was $5k).

Those aftermarket warranties sold by dealers usually aren't too bad, but those offered by stand alone companies (US Fidelis, Mogi, etc) are useless nightmares. They operate only to make a profit, and usually the claims process is very very painful. I'd advise STRONGLY against them. Car and Driver (I think) had an article not too long ago where they compared these companies, and I remember the results being pretty comical. Comedy is not a good thing when you're trying to get your warranty company to pay up on a claim.

I have heard good things about a company called "Old Republic". I have not had direct experience with them, but a mechanic once recommended them. here is some information about them. only one problem, they will only cover a car with less than 100,000 miles on the clock.

God in heaven, what's left of US Fidelis is about a mile from my house...used to have 1100 employees, now they're in bankruptcy, with less than 100 people denying claims and shutting down. The owners stole $65 million dollars in the past 24 months, including several million they spent to build the biggest private home in Lake St Louis, 25,000 sq ft, $17 million price tag. Unfortunately St Louis is home to several scam artists/warranty companies, and I'd be scared to death to ddeal with any of them.

This scuzzball at US Fidelis ran a church out of the same building, and donated most of the company's profits to the church as some sort of goofy tax dodge, then skimmed the money out of the church.

Wasn't Rusty Wallace (Nascar) and his son part of their national advertising campaign? this shows that national advertising backed by a crook can generate serious $$$$. sixty-five mil is nothing to sneeze at. all off the backs of people who were being sold a bill of goods.

They see a commercial with flashy lights and "important messages about your vehicles warranty! and totally buy the line of **** the sales shark on the phone gives em? "Hi I'm Rusty Wallace, I drive car's 'n stuff so you should totally buy this ****. Hey, you happen to live in the South and have been targeted by U.S. Fidelis as someone who would have a friendly disposition to a Nascar Driver, trust me!" Thats when the Mouth Breathing Herds snatch up their cell phones and start burning up the phone lines. See example 13:B below

Rusty will be lucky to get pennies on the dollar if that. and, his actions didn't do a lot to keep the family name clean.

as far as the missing money, the US Fidelis owners will probably get nailed for bankruptcy fraud which means a little time on a chain gang busting rock being watched by a guy with mirror sunglasses toting a shot gun.

obviously the advertisers were willing to take advertising dollars from US Fidelis......they didn't seem to have any problem in promoting these scam
artists, did they?

also, once upon a time, someone who worked in television advertising shared with me that for some strange reason, when a product or service is advertised on TELEVISION, people take it as the gospel TRUTH. he told me it has been studied for YEARS and the advertisers KNOW they have a decided advantage by being on TELEVISION.

for the average moron TV= TRUTH.
