I read this on Jalopnik.

I know you could get a 126 that had a place to chill your champaign. anyone got any pics of such equipment? or any other cars where MB was this classy.

I know Jim B. knows what I'm talking about he knows every option for the 126 :D:D

IIRC the W124 had a refrigerated icebox thingy as an uber expensive option :)

Hatterasguy 05-14-2010 02:08 PM

The 600's had crystal glasses up front, but the owners usualy were in charge of the police or whole country so they didn't have to worry.:D

Accomodations for drinking were not offered by Mercedes Benz, for the W126 series, because the engineers in Germany felt driving was a serious business, and no cupholders were even offered from the factory, for their cars, but many W126 tuners in Germany, like Carat Duchatelet, SGS (Styling Garage in Bremen), Lorinser, Braubus, MKG, Carlsson, and others, did.

AMG's one was a free standing refrigerator in the trunk, but some were actually in the cars.

These set ups were from "Benny S." ( a lesser known W126 Mercedes tuner in the early 80's - seen here on an early 500SEL

I know my 99 had lousy cupholders. From what I see, the finally made decent cupholders after late 2005.

Hatterasguy 05-20-2010 01:22 PM

Yeah the cup holders are over the computer stuffed center console. Spill your coffee and it will cost you $2k!:D

Up to 2000, I am fairly certain Mercedes couldn't make a decent cup holder to save their lives. Probably not even if I put a gun to their head.

If only American car companies spent as much time engineering the actual car as opposed to how many cupholders to put in, and where to put them, they might be able to put out a decent product? :D;)

Hatterasguy 05-20-2010 02:02 PM

The cup holders in my truck are far better than anything MB makes. GM knows how to do two things very well, AC and cupholders.:D

It'll never happen as long as they are engineering to a price point. Too many benefits and retirement plans to pay for.

Fulcrum525 05-20-2010 02:50 PM

Mercedes cup holders......always an after thought (hehe it really does seem to be at the bottom of the engineers list doesn't it? Either that or its the marketing department that does all the work on them....

Yeah it drove me nuts. Whenever I wanted a beer while I was driving the SDL I had to hold it in my lap or hand. You can rest them on the center console but it was way to easy to spill!:D;)
