Me and my friend the Stomach Bug.. Or should I take the bullet instead ?

Three weeks go today (I know). Got up at 5am running to the bathroom. Hello toilet ? Niagara here... Immediately felt light headed & dehydrated. Took a shower, took the dog out and before I was able to leave to school, a dash back to the bathroom. I stopped at the mini-mart on my corner, forwent the usual coffee for Gator-Ade. By 9:45, I was back home and in bed until 8pm. I felt a little better Saturday so I had a lean grilled burger and 2 large cups of water. From about midnight to 6am Sunday morning it was a few hours of shivering in the fetal position under the comforter to the eventual burning hot and the comforter on the floor. All day my food intake consisted of toast, a few crackers and diluted Gator-Ade. Still feeling bad, I stayed home Monday & Tuesday. I went back to school Wednesday, still feeling weak and obviously lost weight. Very slowly, my system seemed to be coming back on line. Throughout all this I had no stomach discomfort and in fact it would give me the I'm hungry, feed me sensations. Home made bland chicken soup, toast, plain yogurt, bananas and apple sauce were my diet for for several days, weening off the Gator-Ade and back to plain water.

By the middle of last week, all seemed to be close to normal. I had some baked chicken and even risked 2 slices of veggie pizza (no meats). Ok good, a few more days and I'll head back to the gym as I stopped smoking and had not a single cup of coffee in those two weeks. The best laid plans of mice and men..

Forward to the middle of last week. My digestive system seemed to be cooperative. No more Niagara Falls and a slow return to normalcy. Other than by that time, my skin reacted with red bumps all along my trunk - collar bone to thighs including my back. It looks almost like chicken pox but no itching, no fluid, no nada. I've always had crappy skin so I just figured my skin was reacting to whatever virus or bacteria that invaded my body. Benadryl, Calamine lotion.. Nothing seems to be clearing it up. Otherwise my digestive system seemed to be returning to normal. I lost obvious weight and figured I'd give myself another week and hit the gym.

Wednesday 2 am.. Hello toilet ? Niagara here" once again.. And again at 4:30am. I decided to stay home from school, figuring that other than two days in the midst of it, I really didn't take any time to rest. On and off every few hours Wednesday and into Thursday. Well, unemployed and uninsured, I need to do something. Called a few local doctor's offices. $75 & up for visit.. "Doctor may want to run tests.." Um.. What to do. Chatting with a buddy, he suggested this: http://www.freeclinics.us/freeclinic.php?&page=3

Never did I think I'd be in this position in my life but my bright spot is finishing school & getting my life back to normal. Found a local clinic. Went there this morning. Intake exam:
Temp - 99
Blood Sugar - 97
Blood Pressure - 100/60 (LOW) Usually hovers in the 120/68 area.
Weight - 180lbs. (6ft 2) I haven't been 180 since high school. I've hovered between 195-205 since.

First doctor listens to the time line and looks at my skin, not having a clue of what she was looking at. She was BIT old. She brought the other two doctors in. I was becoming a science experiment lol. The one suggested that my immune system went berserk attacking whatever bug I got - ruled our E-Coli: " Well three weeks and you'd have been dead if it was E-Coli." (thanks doc) and figured it manifested on my skin. 500mg 3x a day for 10 days of Metronidazol and I should be fine. Possible side effects include: appetite loss, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, metallic taste, nausea, stomach upset or vomiting.

Yay... Where's that snipers bullet.

I had similar

About 2 months ago, woke up at 3:00 AM and felt immense nausea.
Made it to the throne and hurled for 10 minutes, EVERTHING purgred up and out..
Drank 1 glass of water and showered and went back to bed.
4:00 Am. Same thing. Drank water and ate some bread.
5:00 Am. Again.
and so on every hour on the hour for 18 hours.

Moderate temp of 100.5 to a max of 102.

Felt like hell even when it was over and could only eat soup and scrambled eggs and the like.

Weak as a sick dog for 3 days and could not get my body to desire food, no taste sensation and no sense of smell.

Finally took a 3 day regimine of Bio goodies to jump start my gut flora and that did the trick.

Lost 23 lbs in 4 days. Now all my old suits fit me.

I figured that the bug had a 1 hour cycle to build up to the point where my body said NOOOOO, Get this THING out of me! and so I did for 18 hours until there was NOTHING left in my system.

I made it thru OK because I had previously had Girdia when I was young snd knew to keep my fluid level up. Picked it up in Brazil on a job in Manaus my last day in the country, I suffered all the way home on the plane and barely made it back to my house. Crapped my brains out for 2 days before I could get to my Doc who happened to be an Expat Argentintan Cardiac man. During his career in BA and Sau Paulo he saw everythng under the sun and he diagnosed me in 5 minutes. Put me on Sulfadamizine pills the size of footballs and for the cramps he gave me Paragoric and some thing to plug up my gut. Saved my life as I had lost 25% of my body weight in 4 days!

The same MD saved me when I got a Streptococci infection that became the Necrotizing type and I spent 1 week in the hospital (3 days in delirium with 105.5 fever) on Vancomicyn and Floxin (the 2 antibiotics that are the last gasp in pharmacology).

If you ever get any bug that makes you purge more than 4 times in 4 hours drink ALL the water you can, you can make it with no food but dehydration will KILL you quicker that I can type this...

BTW I have been able to keep the weight off and the wifey likes the new me!

Years ago while working in Jedda in the Middle East, I got a bug. I spent 2 days on the toilet. I discovered a new use for a bida (middle eastern toilet). ~ You can throw up into it as its next to the main bowl with out getting up.
These digestive bugs are getting nastier as time goes on. I find the best way to get rid of them is to starve them out. If you dont eat, then they dont get fed & eventually leave. As long as they dont start to eat you !!

A few years ago I was hospitalized for nearly a week with "gastric flu" as they called it, Thoroughly unpleasant experience. Hooked up to tubes all the time and just really unpleasantly ill. Worst part by far was the awful Gatorade or whatever those electrolytic salt drinks were that they give you. I cant stand those things at all but I'd managed to force myself to drink a grape flavoured one before I went to the emergency room (I realised I was losing so much fluids I had to take drastic action). After managing to do that without throwing up and then making it to the hospital and sitting in the emergency room for a few torrid hours, the first thing they do is give me another damm Gatorade. This time a non grape flavored one. Don't know how I managed to stomach that. Then it was hooked up to an IV and into the ward for nearly a week. Not very nice at all, though to be honest, the standard of care I received was very good indeed.

your original symptoms sound alot like what i get 2-3 times a year.mine start out with an aching leg.or a very localized back pain in my upper back.this has been going on for about 10 yrs so i know right when it's coming on.within about an hour i have the worst shivers and shakes imaginable.i just can not get warm.i've been in bed with 3-4 comforters and wrapped head to toe and still it isn't enough.then the heat comes on and blankets come off.times i wish i could take off my skin to cool down i get so hot.and i feel totally fatigued,to the point its work to open my eyes.within 24 hrs it's gone and i'm back to normal.i've had more tests then hairs on my body.and yet they still have no clue as to what it is.and not once have i ever got sick to the point of hurling.

I had an intestinal virus (the 48 hour kind) that lasted three weeks. No other symptoms other than the usual............but, it was miserable.

Doctor didn't have a clue..........was going to do a bunch of stool samples to see if anything was amiss............and it finally, slowly, dissipated on its own.

Three weeks............that's a first..........

I had a stomach bug not too long ago.

Every hour I was belching up the nastiest of nasty. And to make matters worse junk was coming out both ends.

Normally when I get sick like this I drink a lot of water. I'll subsequently vomit it back up, but i keep doing this until I either stop vomiting or the liquid coming back up is clear. Normally I stop vomiting.

The next day I eat straight yogurt. The fresh kind that has the bacteria in it along with some tea. That helps me feel so much better.

Good luck friend. Let us know how you're feeling.

The flu. Joint and Muscle pain is the first sign, one of the strains localizes thru the nasal passages and goes to the muscles for breeding and then to the rest of the body.

Well 24hrs into the meds and none of the "possible side effects" yet. I definitely don't feel as dehydrated as I did yesterday. A little diluted Gatorade here, water there. Just had bowl of my soup and two pieces of toast. My system does feel like it's "tightening" up a bit. Still could knock me over with a sneeze. 180 lbs... DAMN lol. Well The pluses are I lost weight so hitting the gym when I feel better is a good thing to keep a good shape for my age. And I pretty much quit coffee and smoking - my 2 minor vices. One cup of coffee per day and 2-3 cigarettes (not packs).

And I agree that these "bugs" are getting worse. I had one 7 years ago on Thanksgiving night. Forty-Five straight minutes on the leu' because every time I tried to stand up, my body said:" No No !! Sit back down !! We have no need for all this moisture in your system !!" By 2am I was in the emergency room so dehydrated that my lips were shriveled. The lovely doctor gave me two IV bags before sending me home with the recommendation of some Gatorade for a day or so. In a couple of days I was better, but 3 damn weeks ?

Eat eben if you don't want to...

Keep up the fluids and eat something easy to digest but get some food inside. Seriously, your system is compromised and if you don't get some gas to the motor anything else could flatten you.

Take Care, check in tomorrow and let us know how you are or PM me.
