Two Dell laptops battling for the router...

My partner has an Inspiron 15. Roommate just got the same one just with a 17" screen. My partner left to NJ for the week so the issue didn't become apparent until he got back. Router is a NetGear. Now it seems if one of them is online, the other cannot connect to the router. The instant one logs off, the other connects immediately. I have no problem connecting when either of them is on with my old T41 ThinkPad. Any ideas ? TIA..

Be sure both are on DHCP completely, AND ensure there's no static DHCP leases on the router.

The router is about 18 months old and secure. The roomie had an HP before the new Dell and all three were able to connect at the same time. All three being his HP, my ThinkPad and the partners Dell.

Agreed, verify that "obtain an IP address automatically" is checked in the network properties "TCP/IP" section on all the computers that wish to connect to the network.

Agreed it is most likely going to be a DCHP issue.

NetGear and Belkin routers are consistently the worst home routers. I'm not sure why they can't create products that just work. I have never owned or heard someone who owned a NG/Belkin product that was happy with it. D-Link and Linksys on the other hand, can't seem to make a bad product.

My parents bought a new Belkin that would crash everytime more than 2 people logged on. Replaced it with a Linksys (was a Linksys before) and all is well.

Can't say I've had issue with this router in the 2 years we've had it running 2-3 laptops and even a desktop that I sold back in October. I'll have to wait until later today when both boneheads are home to check the IP's...

You might shorten the DHCP lease time in your router.

They may have the same MAC address.
Open a dos box and type ipconfig /all

The Physical address is the Mac address, it should be different for both pc's.

The other thing to check for is the DHCP Pool is open enough to allow X+1 individuals on-line at the same time.

If it's closed down to only one or two DHCP devices, then until someone gets out of the pool (or the number on the new pool-user is within range) no one else can get in.

Make sure your router and/or modem is setup properly to allow EVERYONE you could possibly want on at the same time can do so.

Remember, if you have 20 devices and all those devices are already assigned a number, AND the router/modem is setup to allow ONLY 20 items to play together, then the next one item will have to wait 'til someone/something goes off-line. Then the new item can take its place at the feeding trough.

D-Link products are crap, Linksys are ok but fail after a few years/become unreliable. I use Netgear products in numerous places and rarely have any issues. Especially with their business class products. My network I am connected to right now is a Gigabit Netgear switch. My router I built myself using linux.

Belkin is hit or miss, some of their products are indestructible, others are cursed from day 1.

The lease time shouldn't matter since you have 253 open IP addresses although the unit may have a default cap of 50 or so and unless you're an internet cafe it shouldn't be a problem assuming there are no MAC exclusions or other rules in place.

D-Link stuff works fine. It's the adapters that go bad after 3 years.
Belkin router ran for 4 years until it stopped wanting to lease addresses dynamically from the modem.

Of course everyone's experience is different...
