Justin Bieber scrubbed from the internet by new Shaved Bieber browser tool

Internet users frustrated by Justin Bieber's online ubiquity can now breathe easy – thanks to a programme that censors every mention and photo of the 16-year-old Canadian singer.

Bieber's vast and vociferous online fan base have made it all but impossible to surf the web without stumbling across references to the teenage pop star. But now a web designer has declared war on "unwanted Bieber mentions" by developing a tool that blacks out his name wherever it appears on the internet.

The Shaved Bieber application, which users can add to their browser by saving it as a bookmark, covers up all instances of the words "Justin Bieber" and "Bieber", as well as any photos that include Bieber in their file names.

The tool is likely to prove particularly popular on Twitter, where the incessant tweeting of his teenage fans ensures that Bieber's name is rarely absent from lists of trending topics, which reflect the most talked-about subjects on the site.

Shaved Bieber, which can also be downloaded as Firefox add-on, is the work of web designer Greg Leuch, a member of the Free Art and Technology online creative collective. He has previously devised a plug-in that converts text from upper case to lower case, in reaction to the caps lock-heavy blog posts of rapper Kanye West.

Bieber shot to fame two years ago after his mother posted videos of his performances at amateur singing competitions onto YouTube. He earned a cult following and was quickly signed up by major US label Island Records.
His most recent album My World 2.0 went to No 1 in the US charts and No 3 in Britain.

Bieber's dominance of Twitter's trending topics took another blow earlier this month when the micro-blogging website changed the algorithm is uses to calculate the hottest topics being discussed by users.

It now gives priority to words and phrases that enjoy a spike of popularity, at the expense of terms – like Bieber – that are tweeted in large volumes more regularly.

I am. My youngest daughter just turned 18 and pointed out to me that now all my kids are adults. Yeah, right!

Along those same lines, I think my mother had a tougher time with me turning 40 than I did!

Luckily I didn't hear about this kid until my MOTHER told me about him...and when I heard it on ...*thinks* it was either the Colbert Report or Jon Stewart...can't remember at the moment.

Also, luckily, I haven't been hearing much about him online. I dunno what everyone else is looking up, but I have only seen it once by accident in total. Awesome!

Not particularly interested. Nor do I really care. If people like him, whatever.

Hmm...and I have a twitter too...odd that I don't see it...probably because I don't go on it much.
