Happens, 10mm Glocks seem to be popular backpack pistols for bear country.

"The man fired nine rounds from his .45 caliber, semiautomatic pistol at the animal, which then stopped and walked into the brush".

Bears are tough critters. Even after nine shots, he still walked away, but died about 100 feet away.

Now you know why Ruger made the .480 Ruger with alternate FMJ and solid "skull buster" rounds.

The man was lucky, IMHO. A .45 will stop most people but a bear is a lot more than a person. And they are very tough.

Few animals have more resistance to bullets and/or pain.

If big is good, bigger is better!

Say hello to the .700 Nitro Express. Built to stop a pissed off charging hippo, rhino, or elephant in its tracks.

heck, might as well use a 20mm anti-aircraft round. That .700 is already almost 18mm.

I've spent a fair amount of time in grizzly country. We carried bells so that the bears could easily hear us coming. We also had pepper spray. It was Canada. No handguns allowed.

Oh boy - grizzly vs. pepper spray? The bear probably would consider the spray as some form of condiment...
