But I saw one thing that either scares me or answers everything.

"We have the best and the brightest minds in America working to stop this spill."
Paraphrased.

If our best haven't been able to solve it by now we are in REAL trouble.

But the real answer I fear is the government(political) and business issue's are really driving the search for a solution.

I watched both FNC and MSNBC afterwards for the "analysis"...it was very odd that Fox commentators found the speech to be half decent while Chris Matthews and KeithO had nothing good to say about it. What is the world coming to???/

I find it interesting that not even the President's supporters are posting here in support of the speech.

I'm not a "supporter" of any american president and I did not bother listening to the speech; however I do think the US does need some sort of long term energy policy. Making alternative energy available only works if there is an incentive to use it; i.e., if the cost of oil is allowed to increase significantly. American oil prices (and the cost of energy, in general) is much to low to encourage less use or the conversion to other energy sources.

The obvious problem is the short term impact on the economy, which is already "slow" in some parts of the US. Will the development of other energy sources provide an economic boost to the overall economy, or will it be limited to some very specific sectors? Can the US afford higher energy prices during this "recovery," or will it slow growth too much?

It will be interesting to watch what happens over the next 5-10 years.

your "plan" would devastate the economy in this country and put millions of people who live too far from work to walk or cycle out of a job.... Not to mention drive up to insane heights, the cost of everything...I am certainly happy that you dont work somewhere that could implement foolishness like this.

It wasn't a plan, it was a question. It is obvious that the cost of energy will increase significantly over the next few decades, how and when would you like to see it happen? Do you think the US should have a long term energy policy, or do you think they should let the rest of the world decide for them?

I thought it was a good speech.He keeps addressing the issue about alternative energy.Hopefully he will keep pressing on the fact that hybrids and electric cars should be the future. If two kids can take a Prius and can with some alterations get 100 MPG,i think car makers should do the same. I think that it is time to get rid of the very very old gas engine.

Transportation is just one aspect of the issue.
