I remember my dad teaching me all the maintenance stuff, and how to drive safely, he was a real stand up guy:toff: ... and after high school going on a trip with him talking about cars... this is when he admitted to jumping his 1973 Challenger over hwy 70. he grew up in the valley on a farm... so the highway was raised by about 3 feet above the county roads. so when your going over 100mph and try and cross the highway, you can get air!! :eek::D:D

What stories have you been told or have you shared with your kids that made them say WTF :eek: :notworthy:

The same kid that I successfully taught how to change brake pads on the W124 when at age 7 turned 16 this week...and somehow doesn't have the hand/wrist strength to pop the gas cap off, pull the hood release, or disengage (engage) the convertible top levers on her car!!!

Alas!!! There is NO way she is going to be able to change a tire!!! :(

Not enough strength to pop the gas cap off? Are you sure this person isn't 90?

Maybe she has arthritis from too much texting!

Unfortunately my dad is not really a car guy at all.. he's driven FWD appliances most of his life.

My dad was a car guy until about his fifth or sixth child!

He had a very sporty (for its day) pair of Studebakers: a 51 bulletnose v8 stick overdrive which he bought new when he was working at studies...it was surf grey (off white grey) with concord blue wheels. This was a special order so when it came along the line my grandfather who worked in the seat shop could put in a special seat which had the low line seat covers and the most expensive (president) springs and padding. Dad added a second exhaust system and said it increased the top speed from 103 to 106 ;).

Then dad bought a 53 Lowey coupe which had the v8 but with an automatic. It also had a custom paint scheme with ivory on the majority and teal green in the side scallops and top. It was a beauty. the integrated bumpers and low nose still looks modern 60 years later.

My first memory of working on cars was when I was just a little fellow about 5. Dad had taken the brakes off the front of one of the above studies and had changed the shoes. He had a little gizmo part which he was puzzling over. He could not remember how it went and was cursing softly about it. I had been squatting next to him entranced by the beauty of working on things mechanical. He said that after he had sort of given up and laid the part down he saw this pudgy little hand pick up the part and put it on in the exact place it went.;)

I had the monkey wrench gene from a very early age!

Dad was excellent on mechanical aptitude but was dyslexic. If not he probably would have made an excellent Engineer or Architect. If he were still alive he could give me advice on how to set up my Miata for autocross.
