Wheeler Dealer Question

I've been watching the shows on YouTube, the last one I watched was on the E30 BMW wagon. Outside of the profits from advertising, royalties, etc. the total profit was 100 British Pounds! This guy had to take time to buy the car from auction, buy the parts, the poor mechanic had to do all that work.

100BP is not much profit.

You are correct but there is always BUT. He owns a dealership and the money they use are BBC money so, not a big deal here.
Just think Top Gear How much money they waste?? But the profit margin from Video's, merchandise, TV right etc. is huge. Top Gear now is watched in more than 45 countries around the globe, plus magazine plus AD slots on the program..the revenue is in millions.

I've watched most of the shows and I have yet to see a car sold for money that would pay for the mechanics time. The cars they flip are rather low priced and making a true profit just isn't in the cards.

Yeah but its like what I do with cars. You buy a car cheap, put less into it than its worth, enjoy wrenching, and enjoy owning the car. The you sell it on and break even or put a few bucks in your pocket. Better than the losing game most enthusiast play.

Ed is a great Mechanic and I've learned a lot of little tips and tricks watching that show. I like it and have seen every episode.

Wayne Carini fits into the same category; they'll take a car that costs x and sell it for x+2% or sometimes even LOSE money on the deal and say BS like "well, you win some you lose some". If you lose some, then you shouldn't have been in the business in the first place; and none of that takes into consideration the time and risk they took to get the car into their possession, fix it, and flip it. Not only could I do better than these idiots, I have done better than these idiots.

Well buying 5 year old Japanese cars at auction and reselling them or a profit doesn't make very good TV.

Do you think they want to project the image of making money hand over fist? Probably not. Think about this. Every store I have been to tries to say "Oh, we barely make ends meet.". Utter BS. These are what they call "loss leaders". They advertise that they barely make money and you don't think they are screwing you as opposed to that guy over there who is being driven in his limo to work and the golf course.
