Toilet flapper Alert!

We just had the perfect storm toilet disaster - clogged bowl, stuck flapper, 2nd floor bathroom. Its pretty amazing what 20 minutes of overflow will do.

Anyway the culprit (not counting the last user) is the horribly designed flapper, which is the predominant style for sale at the hardware stores. If the chain falls in front of the flapper, the jagged metal sections can easily snag the thin rubber lip, holding it open. I only found one style that was OK which has a smooth plastic chain attached near the middle, and not on the edge. Hope someone can benefit from this misfortune.

Yes it was. What made me go ballistic was that the same bathroom had a shower arm leak inside the wall 6 months ago. How many times is a person supposed to patch a living room ceiling in a lifetime? I think I've met my quota.

I'm going through the process right now. The roof leaked all winter. New roof, new ceiling patch. This is gonna be a learning experience for me.

Get a flusher with a float on the chain. Or shorten the chain so it can't foul the flapper.

Last time my crapper did that, it flooded the bathroom, got the hall and master bedroom carpet wet, and went down the ductwork into the furnace, and it was all "brown" water that went everywhere. I turned in a claim, and $8000 later it was all repaired.

Man, I don't know if it's just me but I've never seen a bathroom here in the US (in the apartment/home) that has a floor drain. Anybody know the logic behind this?

I have yet to see one also. I've seen them in Europe where the shower is not a confined area.

Yeah, it makes problems like these (original poster) easier to deal with, at least!

Cleaning is so much easier too.

You would require a "depressed floor", otherwise there is no way to get "slope to drain" and the overflow would simply go out the door unless there was a "curb" at the doorway to stop the flow which of course doesn't meet code. Most homes aren't built with depressed floors; especially at above grade floors.

I have floor drains in the bathrooms, kitchen and toilet.
Very practical with cleaning (men style with buckets of hot water and a hose).

a drain costs bout $100 or so installed, that is the reason you don't see them much. Also if the trap dries out you get sewer gas smell.

Not a bad idea, except it wouldn't help the broken shower arm which sprang a leak inside the wall. Also if there is a drain blockage farther downstream, then there could be a geyser effect (seen that in basements) unless it just empties outside.

Yeah, lack of drains in bathroom floors irks me too. I imagine insurance companies sit around thinking about ways to get them in place.
