Happy 4th of July

Happy 4th of July everybody.

I'll be at the beach most of the weekend. Probably watch 4th fireworks from the beach down the street. http://www.congresshall.com/ It's usually a good show. Weather will be nice.

The front porch will be full of flags. My brother in law won't be around so I won't have to argue with him over the order of flag precedence. When we hang the service flags of the family members along with the colors, he always presents the services bass ackwards.

In case anyone is curious, the order or precedence when presented, is the US flag on the right, as presented, then the service branch, by age Army, Marines, Navy, etc as discussed below.

Order of Precedence for Flag Display

The order of precedence for flags is 1) National, 2) State, 3) Military (in order of creation date), and 4) Other.

The United Nations uses alphabetical order in its presentation of national flags so that no one country has precedence over another.

According to the Military District of Washington, Ceremonies and Special Events Office, Army Regulation #840-10 mandates that state flags should be displayed according to the date that each state was admitted to the union.

According to the Department of Defense Directive 1005.8, the prescribed precedence of military flags is determined by service birthdays. The appropriate order is given below:

Army Birthday --14 June 1775
Marine Corps Birthday – 10 November 1775
Navy Birthday – 13 Oct 1775-Abolished Feb 1781-Reinstated 7 Sep 1781
Air Force Birthday – 18 September 1947
*Coast Guard Birthday – 4 August 1790
more.....

To our ensemble, I add in the Culpepper Minutemen Flag, just to flame out anyone who would be offended.

Hand salute to those who fought and fight for our freedom, including guys like these.

Question * Query!!! *

Mr. dynalow:

Just curious...

When a float (as in a parade) is heading down the street and it has the US and the State's flags on poles, fixed on the back end of the float, what side should the US Flag be on? The curb side or the street side of the float?

I've seen it argued that as you're looking at the back of the float, you'd want to see the US Flag on the curb, or right, side of the float.

Others have said that as the float is proceeding forward, as the flags are coming TOWARD you at that point, the US Flag should be on the street, or left, side of the float.

What say you, oh great Flag Knowledge Presenter?

I've been watching the Cape May fireworks display for quite a few years now from my house on the other side of the Delaware Bay. Looks like a pretty nice show but from 15 or so miles away the scale is a bit off!!!

Happy 4th to everyone.

I'll be chilling out at the Army Navy Country Club right across the river from one of the greatest fireworks displays in the country on Sunday. That should be pretty fun. I hope all the rest of you have a terrific Independence Day!

"175. Position and manner of display

The flag, when carried in a procession with another flag or flags, should be either on the marching right; that is, the flag's own right, or, if there is a line of other flags, in front of the center of that line.

The flag should not be displayed on a float in a parade except from a staff, or as provided in subsection (i) of this section."

My opinion, and I am paid well to render opinions, is that when displaying it on a float, and on a staff, the presentation would be no different than in a "procession. That is, on the marching right as "moving forward" (my term) in a procession.

This link http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/ourflag.pdf on page 15 shows an illustration for a marching procession. I don't know why their would be a difference for a "motorized" procession.

Happy 4th to everyone.
There is a flag lowering ceremony every night at sunset at on the beach Cape May Point, Tim. All flags flown have been casket covers of dead servicemen. A very popular event here.

CBS news is going to show it on their evening news on the 4th of July.

I'll be heading down to DE to "visit" the gf's relatives who happen to live at the beach...Hope everyone has a great and SAFE holiday weekend. Remember, alcohol and fireworks don't mix very well
