Ak74...

Since the 47 is illegal in CT, I'm kind of feeling an AK74 next. I want something I can drag through the mud, fill with crap, and in general beat on and it will still work. AK's work like my Sig and mosin, can't kill them. I'm not a huge AR fan because I don't thing they can handle the kind of abuse and neglect other design's can.

So who makes good AK74's? I heard the Bulgerian ones are not to bad.

5.45 is still cheap so I can put a lot of rounds down range.

Take it to the range like all his other devices

So what is it that makes the 74 legal and the 47 illegal when they are more or less the same thing? (Bullet size?)

I have a Chek made one. I think its one of the better made ones. I would trust former East block made ones and Yugo made ones.

Its been a while since I've looked at AK's, probably late 90's. So, things might have or probably have changed. The MAADIs (Egyptians) had decent metal, but lousy wood. The Chienese had good wood, but the metal didn't impress me. I remember them being about $250. I don't think the Romanian nor Bulgarians had been imported yet. Some Romanian Draginovs were being imported. I think $2K, but complete and very very nice. I want to say my Chek was about $450 back then. Also, I bought a lot of East German 20 or 30 round mags. Way better than the Chinese mags back then. They had a rib on the back side of the mag. Soon, the Chinese were copying that rib.
I'm not going to say all stuff Chinese is crap. They are capable. I do have an early paratrooper model SKS. Its well made. Screw in barrel, fordged trigger guard etc. They were selling by the boat loads back then. Then they started to cheapen them up. Pinned in barrels, stamped steel trigger units and a few other things. Then the Rumanians, Yugos and Russians SKS were imported. They looked very good, but the price was a lot more.

During the cold war years the Bulgarian quality of AK 47 was rated higher than the Russians. Till 1994 they where making more AK's than anybody else in the world. They used to have a state owned company called Kintex that the only purpose was trading in weapons The whole Soviet block army was sorted with Bulgarian AK's.

Dumb politicians trying to make feel good laws for hippies. The 47 is "evil" but the same people who think its evil don't know much about firearms. Hence I can own the more modern and deadly version.

I'm told the Bulgarian AK's are some of the best, and I found a bunch at the last gunshow at a fair price. $550ish.

At the next gunshow I plan on picking one up. The ownly downside is that the furniture was plastic which I don't really care for, luckly wood furniture is easy to buy on gunbroker.

One of the draws for me is that 5.45 is still cheap, I can buy 1100 round spam cans for $120.
